Oliver couldn't move.
The voice had come from the second floor, from the bedroom where he had slept as a child.
"Who is that?" he whispered.
Margaret grabbed his wrist.
"Don't answer it."
The voice came again.
"Oliver, please. It's cold up here."
It sounded like a little boy.
Oliver pulled away from Margaret and ran upstairs.
"Wait!" she shouted.
He reached the bedroom and pushed the door open.
The room was empty.
His childhood bed stood against the wall. Dust covered the furniture, and the curtains hung motionless. Nothing appeared unusual until he noticed the wardrobe.
Its doors were open.
Inside, someone had scratched three names into the wooden back panel.
OLIVER. EVELYN. THOMAS.
Beneath them was a fourth name.
MARGARET.
Oliver turned toward the doorway.
The elderly woman stood behind him, breathing heavily.
"What does your name have to do with this?" he demanded.
Margaret looked as though she might cry.
"I was there that night."
"Where?"
"Inside the house."
Before she could explain, Oliver noticed a small photograph lying on the floor inside the wardrobe.
It showed four children standing beneath the oak tree in front of the missing house.
Oliver recognized himself, Evelyn, and Thomas.
The fourth child was Margaret.
But the woman standing behind him was at least seventy years old.
He looked from the photograph to her face.
"This is impossible."
Margaret shook her head.
"That photograph was taken sixty years ago. I haven't aged since the night the house disappeared."
Oliver stumbled backward.
"What are you?"
"Someone who made a terrible mistake."
Suddenly, the bedroom lights went out.
A freezing wind swept through the room, though every window was shut.
From somewhere beneath the floor came the sound of a door creaking open.
Margaret grabbed Oliver's hand.
"It's happening again."
The floorboards began to tremble.
Then the wall opposite them slowly changed. The faded wallpaper peeled away, revealing a white door with a brass handle.
Oliver had never seen it before.
Yet somehow, he knew exactly what lay behind it.
The house on Willow Street.
And from the other side, a girl whispered his name.
"Oliver, you have one chance to remember what you did."
