Our hearts are heavy this week.
We extend our deepest condolences to Alameda County Sup. Wilma Chan’s family and close friends. We lost a champion, tireless advocate, and friend for labor, child care providers, families, and children.
May we honor her legacy today and onward.
Beyond the great work Wilma did for us, as one of the best elected officials & policymakers, as a Supervisor & as an Assemblymember, she was an awesome mentor, a true role model for Asian American & women of color & an amazing person with the best heart, who loved dogs & babies.
It’s a sad day, for California lost one of the most ardent and very best advocate for children, working families and the elderly, Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan. There’s no one more astute, smart, pragmatic, politically savvy and down to earth as Wilma.
We are saddened to hear of the passing of Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan, a true champion for working people and for improving California’s healthcare system. We will miss @wilmachan7’s strong advocacy on behalf of healthcare workers and patients.
My heart is broken by the news of Wilma Chan’s passing in this awful tragedy, and my deepest condolences to her family. This is a true loss for all of the Bay Area. Supervisor Chan was an absolute trailblazer and a decades-long champion for those in need.

Today’s Supreme Court ruling once again underscored the incredible strength of the ACA. A record 31 million people have enrolled in health care through the law – 1.2 million more signed up using the special enrollment period, open through 8/15. Sign up at https://t.co/Z1ZSzQNxNn.
"After a decade of partisan attacks, the #ACA remains the law of the land, helping millions of Californians access and afford care,” says @aewright. Read the release here: https://t.co/ME2NaxZ8aS
📢New: @SacBeeEditBoard directs urgent message to @GavinNewsom & #CALeg in the final days of #CABudget negotiations: "A final budget without the $200M annual commitment sought by public health leaders would be a colossal failure by CA's leadership." #CACantWait
From @SacBeeEditBoard: Reopening California this week inspires optimism. But let’s not forget how we got here, and what needs to change so that the ugly truths laid bare by this pandemic are not a part of our “new normal” https://t.co/lZguFPkbzi
"A neglected public health system, paired with unequal access to health care, unleashed the worst of the pandemic into Black and Latinx communities."
CA must invest into our public health system to provide equitable care to these communities #CACantWait

New: Public health leaders & powerful Democratic lawmakers are calling on @Newsom to provide public health infrastructure funding to California’s 61 local public health departments, to help respond to public health threats & rebuild a severely underfunded public health system.
#COVID19 taught us an unforgettable lesson: waiting until a crisis strikes to invest in public health costs lives. @GavinNewsom, CA must not repeat these deadly mistakes! Invest $200M ongoing #CABudget to rebuild public health infrastructure and workforce.
Cannot say enough how much I've heard about this problem in pandemic - data systems are slow, clunky, extremely time consuming. Some local health departments still rely on fax. Public health workers spend incredible time on data entry, working with outdated data systems.
Join @DrPanMD, @JimWoodAD2, CA county health officials & frontline public health workers & advocates to learn why #CACantWait to invest in health equity. CA must invest $$ annually to avoid another crisis like COVID-19. Watch live at https://t.co/2fZnDyDqfN
Breaking: Despite a staggering $76B surplus, @GavinNewsom’s #CABudget contains no new $$ for #PublicHealth. We are deeply dismayed & will continue to work w/ our partners in the Sen. & Asm. to advance the #CACantWait budget proposal to rebuild local PH workforce & infrastructure.
