@prof_g If I understand the analogy correctly, this is the only way anyone can have a modicum of peace in mathematical research. One cannot work on known problems without the feeling that there are 10 other people with 100 agents each working on it at the same time as you.
@pickover 90% of math PhDs have been leaving the academia since the 1990s. In fact, many of the people in AI labs are bitter (though serendipitous) former PhDs and taking a lot of pleasure wreaking havoc on math academia.
@joelwatsonfish@jimfreitag it's in the assessment of what's interesting/important that the mathematical BS is made. notice how we now "realize" old problems were actually not really that important after all. Probably sciences (e.g. physics) have much more clarity/truth on that.
@littmath@nihilunbounded@slopdropz You must acknowledge that currently much of what's publicly visible (e.g. posting dozens of papers in a few months) is unbecoming of our once proud field.
@nihilunbounded@alz_zyd_ I think the Superintelligence will beg to come back to math. GPT: "I'll leave this for the mentally weak, give me back that math shit."
@midchesslevel@nihilunbounded This is a prof who opens a Calc class by saying that it would be equivalent to have students memorize the phone book and rank them by who got the most right.
@DeryaTR_ What is the meaning of privileged in your sentence? I'm sure as MD you out earn most of those and its not true that a substantial part of mathematicians have family money.
@nihilunbounded@nightshifterzz don't send it to that place. that would mean I would need to read an article from proofs and prompts. Even the name is lame
@dsavitt@jdlichtman@ElliotGlazer After seeing these 5 page AI solutions to big problems over and over again, my conclusion is that humans just aren't made to do math.
@nihilunbounded@alpoge could have gone way harder tbh. He can clearly do his own version of OAI Mathapocalypse but he's held back on stuff people are working on and tried to involve domain experts when there are active people. Letting things cool, I feel like he's conducted himself well.
