This week’s plot depicts how organic carbon could be sequestered in early Mars’ crust. Hydrothermal alteration of ultramafic rocks into smectite clays creates methane, which is trapped in the subsurface, possibly accounting for a significant part of early Mars’ atmosphere. (1/2)
