@an_chomsky What about his older claim that these types of LLM have value purely as an engineering marvel but make intellectual/scientific contribution whatsoever?
@dioscuri Why rarely? The Kantian view that underlies (for e.g. )Chomsky’s critique holds that reasoning (even less demandingly, cognition) is totally widespread and banal among us and that’s why LLM can’t begin to approximate even what kids are capable of cognitively.
@an_chomsky Hi, when you say he shifted just a few months later - can you point me to the article? Thanks! Also fyi I am very in favor of poverty of stim being vindicated; and I don’t think LLM would threaten that in any way. I’d think the anti-empiricist argument has a very broad foundation
@eschwitz Two thoughts: 1) For much modern phil, the notion of a subject presupposes the unity of cs, so the fractional view is incoherent. 2) Despite this, a fractional view of subjects has been well-rehearsed in the U.S.: cf the 3/5th Clause! So the arguments against it ought to include
@langofmind @dbphys “I love music.” “I love that I love music.” “I love that I love that I love music.” Etc. There are an infinite number of sentences of this type , but each sentence is finite in length.
@Harmony_Holiday Isnt it? When it comes to My Foolish Heart there’s no one like Bill…was just listening to the way he and Tony do it on this album, after revisiting Chris Turner’s amazing version … what a song
