My school puts us in the hot seat while classmates use live Google searches to grill us on our chosen subject.

The challenge is called "Be an Expert."

You pick a topic, spend days mastering every corner of the domain, and then sit in front of the room with zero notes or reference tabs open.

Peers get unrestricted internet access to write 10 hyper-specific live questions in real time. To pass the benchmark, you have to answer at least 9 out of 10 questions correctly on the spot.

Most schools test whether you memorized chapter definitions for a Friday quiz. Alpha tests whether you can hold your ground against live internet queries and actually master a topic.

A newly released peer-reviewed study presents the results of the first nationwide homeschool achievement study in 15 years:

“A Nationwide Study on the Academic Achievement of Homeschool Students and Parents’ Reasons for Homeschooling”

Among the findings:

Homeschool students scored 29 percentile points higher in reading than the norm group

25 percentile points higher in language
25 percentile points higher in math
26 percentile points higher in social studies
27 percentile points higher in science

The study also found that student achievement was generally not associated with family income, parent education levels, or whether the teaching parent held state teacher certification.
