The AI 'extinction' statement is misdirection, and Big Tech's sudden AI regulation tour is a charade—we've known their products cause real harm for years. I talk to @safiyanoble, @emilymbender, @mer__edith, @rajiinio, @FoxCahn for @TheAtlantic:

Why do AI boosters seem to think citations to the future ("I'm talking about better, future AI" or "This tech is young, better versions will be better at being factual") are legit?
Also: LLMs by design make shit up. That's not a temporary bug. It's what they're built to do.
@janusrose@tante What I don’t get (amongst other things) is the priority placed on the efficiency of production of text. I mean, who out there looks at our present information ecosystem & says—“the problem is that there isn’t enough content?” Truth drowns in irrelevance already. So add water?

🤖 Are we now closing in on the point where the public understands language models have no clue what they are talking about?
How about, the point where AI labs recognize this can’t be fixed with current methods?
What happens when we reach those points?
A lot of this proprietary period argument comes down to "scooped." We could emphasize "first" less in this community. We could more deeply value lasting efforts over quick "I did it in the shortest time!" papers. It would improve everything about who we are and the work we do.
