This week, we had the pleasure of hosting Professor Peter Galison, a Joseph Pellegrino University Professor at @Harvard University, Director of the Black Hole Initiative, and Science Teams Lead for the Black Hole Explorer (BHEX) mission. A prominent figure in the study of black holes, Peter is particularly known for his interdisciplinary work bridging physics, history, and philosophy of science.

BHEX is a bold @NASA's mission concept to launch the Event Horizon Telescope into space, enabling sharper views of black holes than ever before. From revealing elusive photon rings predicted by Einstein’s general relativity, to measuring black hole masses and spins across the universe, BHEX aims to answer some of the biggest questions in astrophysics.

Peter shared the mission’s science goals and high-capacity data streaming requirements, opening the door for discussions on TeraNet-2 as a potential optical ground station for BHEX. The visit also included technical exchanges with our Astrophotonics team, lab and telescope tours, and an @ICRAR seminar on the mission’s vision at @uwanews.

We’re excited by the possibilities this collaboration could unlock, connecting Western Australian optical communications infrastructure with the next leap in black hole exploration.
