Found a desktop app i built in one week last december and forgot about.

Tauri, Rust, Polars, SolidJS. Loads 10 million rows of parquet in 206 ms and lets you sort, filter, run SQL and export.

Here's the honest part: 206 ms is Polars. i didn't make it fast. My job was to not make it slow, and that took two fixes.

The debug build loaded the same file in 8,252 ms. Release with LTO: 206ms. Forty times faster, same laptop, same evening.

Then i got impatient and clicked sort a few times while it was still working. Six requests in one second, each with its own copy of 10 million rows. 21 GB.
Wrapped the DataFrame in an Arc, blocked clicks while loading. 2-3 GB.

That laptop fell down the stairs in january.

Started the binary today on my 2017 machine with 8 GB of RAM. Loaded the same 10 million rows in 1.3 seconds. Still works.

Never shipped it. No users. But the lesson stuck: pick a fast engine, then get out of its way.

The story in it: a guy with 8 horses wrote to horsemate, didn't want to pay $20 for a tier built for 10. We had add-ons that would've put him at $13. Turned out they weren't mentioned anywhere on the site. Fixed it in 20 minutes with Claude Code and Opus doing the work =)

@madsmadsdk Horsemate 1.0 was a PWA. It was hell. Everything had to be realtime and the PWA layer fought me on it the whole way. I honestly don't remember the details anymore, which probably says something =)

Har själv jobbat i en LMS i min föredetta sambos företag. Vi delade upp kurserna i delar, 6-20 beroende på hur stora kurserna var. Och efter varje del, hade vi ett "delprov", vilket i princip var en kunskapskontroll som man behövde klara. Det var allt ifrån fritextsvar till enkla 1X2 frågor. 20st per delprov. Vi hade en bank på 30 frågor, men LMSen valde ut 20 random till varje elev.
När vi märkte att en person plötsligt började skriva väldigt akademiskt i sina fritextsvar, eller uppvisade historik som pekade på extern hjälp, så gjorde vi faktiskt så att vi kontaktade eleven via telefon och frågade från banken av frågor som eleven inte hade fått i det faktiska delprovet.
Det satte deras kunskap om det dom hade läst om på test, i en mer kontrollerad form.

One thing i remember is when a roll-out for a large Swedish enterprise went bad because of wrong BIOS version. 10k units needed BIOS update. That was fun
