Really cool story from my Netherlands trip (check out the kicker at the end!):
Was working out of a small town called Ommën, and when we were exploring the town stumbled on this unique Surinamese restaurant (Suriname is in South America, former Dutch colony with Muslims from South Asia and Indonesia)
Being Netherlands, we were the only ones eating dinner at 9pm (seems Dutch eat early dinners).
So we invited the owner/chef, Don, to sit with us. We were going around sharing stories like the one Steve Jobs had below (an impulsive decision that changed your whole life)
Don stole the show
He immigrated to Netherlands when he was 18 ten years ago. But it wasn’t easy, ended up broke and divorce, gave up on his dream of being a pilot, and began rebuilding his life.
Don was able to remarry, go to culinary school, and start a food truck.
Then his truck broke down.
So he went to Facebook marketplace to buy a new one, and met this old Dutch guy.
The gentleman asked why he wanted a pickup truck? Don explained he has a food truck and needs a new pickup to tow it around
The man said “why don’t you just start a restaurant?”
Don replied “I’d love that but I can’t afford it”
“Yes you can” said the man. “I have a place available to rent, come see it”
So he took Don to the restaurant space, which is really nice and in the middle of Ommën.
“Do you like it?”
“Of course! But there’s no way I could afford it”
“Yes you can. How much can you afford?”
“Nothing”
“Ok I will waive the 6 months deposit and you can just pay half the rent rate”
“What’s the trick?”
“There’s no trick, I’ll draft the contract and you can see “
Indeed, there was no trick. This kind Dutch man just saw an opportunity to help a young man and father trying to establish his life
Don opened “Fawakka Ommën” 2 months ago. It’s going so well he was able to get a mortgage to get a house, and start 2 more restaurants (one in Hauge, the other in Greece).
Here’s the kicker: when we remarked how much God had blessed him, Don replied “all this happened after I paid a large amount of Zakat and did a qurbani sacrifice for Eid”
The power of charity, Subhanallah
@chamath wish you were in the Elon musk clubhouse call, they brought on the CEO of robinhood. Would have been refreshing to hear your blunt pushback. What you mentioned in the podcast seems to be true. He mentioned VAR; $3B being asked from NSCC etc
@elonmusk speaking at clubhouse and it’s the first time I have seen rooms full along with the overflow rooms. Curious to see the @neuralink updates. It sounds amazing.

@CNN I just saw this on my Snapchat stories. Pope apparently making history by giving mass at the birthplace of Islam. Abu Dhabi is not the birthplace of Islam. Please fact check before posting news. Literally would have taken a Wikipedia search to know this.
@hinckleysprings After calling your customer service for about 6 months periodically, I have gone nowhere. I have tried your customer complaint, emailed your executives. Still nothing. For a water company, how do you still exist which such terrible service?
