7 years ago, we got an exciting assignment in Lesotho.
Collin Bhiza, Douglous Zvomuya, and I headed to Lesotho. Our flight was delayed, and we missed the evening light to Lesotho as we arrived in Johannesburg after the flight had left.
We struggled to get assistance from the airline, but we relentlessly pushed them because their flight from Harare was delayed. We were connecting to Maseru using the same airline, and it should have been easy. It took us more than 2 hours to get assistance. They agreed to rebook us for the morning flight to Maseru. They took care of our overnight accommodations only after I threatened to narrate our ordeal on social media. The introductory meeting in Maseru with the client was supposed to start at 8:30 am, and the flight was arriving at 7:45 am. We were in panic mode. This was a big national institution in that country. We were afraid we would not make it on time.
The flight arrived as scheduled, and we had less than 40 minutes to go to the hotel, leave our bags, and go straight to the meeting.
As we were being driven by our hosts from the airport we realized the assignment had been divided into groups and given to different firms from southern Africa. One was from Zambia, another from South Africa, and we were from Zimbabwe. The firm from South Africa had 2 Zimbabweans, including the team leader for this assignment.
After introductions, the discussions drifted to people showcasing their credentials. This a discussion I try to avoid in most instances. The SA team had two people with the title Dr. and the Zambian team had one. We had none except our Masters degrees, and two of us were registered psychologists. We agreed as a team not to parade our qualifications in public discussions. The other teams went into overdrive about their qualifications and the work they had done.
Our introductory meeting with clients (all the firms were present) was not long. We quickly moved to the assigned seminar rooms to start the work. Collin and Mr Zvomuya were handling one group, and I was handling another. The other firms were handling one group each.
When we regrouped for lunch, we found that the other firms were missing. Out of curiosity, I asked one of the coordinators if they were having lunch at a different location. I was told that their contracts were terminated and told to leave. The reason was that they pitched their session to executives as if they were training high school students. She said the consultants asked the executives if they had heard of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. The consulting teams were told to leave immediately. The other group made exactly the same mistake.
Lesson: Always understand your audience and get to know their expectations in advance.

Your mind can be your worst enemy. Train it well. Don’t dwell on negativity. Don’t let Satan take control. Always ask the Almighty to make you accept the things you can’t change. Submit to His Decree. When you’re able to achieve that, you’ll reach a state of calmness & serenity.
Don't think you’ve made it in life because of your power, position and authority. None of it will last. Nothing in this life will last. So always remain humble and attach your heart to that which matters. Keep the Almighty close and you’ll emerge the winner.
