Last week, SAO’s Donya Mand, MD, attended the @AmCollSurgeons Surgical Simulation Summit.
From cutting-edge technologies to economical, scalable solutions, these human-relevant training models are helping move the field beyond the use of animals.
Explore the article below for standout highlights, including Dr. Mand's poster with co-author @dianaencaladamd, and work from @ChrisDeckerMD, @mikeklein, @RyleeMcGuireDO, and @KaraFaktor.

@vemadoc@topknife This. Protect your trauma bay. Triaging a stable pt to the shock room "based on mechanism" will sink your response quickly. Putting a senior clinician at the front door can minimize this risk.
A true pioneer in transplant surgery, Dr. Robert Montgomery has expanded the donor pool through antiviral research and made history with a pig to human kidney transplant. He’s also a transplant recipient! Read his story in @TIME’s Time for Change series.

This past year, our program obtained an open surgical skills curriculum for major trauma, which uses an advanced modular operative simulator to practice treating high-acuity, low occurrence injuries. The “Cut Suit” trainer is a state of the art simulator that allows residents to perform anything from an ED thoracotomy, complete with repair of cardiac injuries and cross-clamping the aorta, to a laparotomy, with repair of major liver bleeding, splenectomy and shunting of major vessels, with real bleeding, and without risking the life of a real patient. Our program was part of the first-ever pilot program using this simulator to train non-military surgeons, and is the only residency program in the world to use it more than 10 times per year. The Cut Suit system was obtained through a grant applied for and awarded, from the Committee of Interns and Residents’ Patient Care Trust Fund @cirseiu through the NYC Health & Hospitals system @BellevueHosp. The grant proposal was led by 2 of our residents, Pratik Chandra and Yanzhi Yang. #NYULHSurgery
Today was yet another reminder of the dangers NYC police officers face in their daily efforts to keep our city safe.
We’re thankful one of our officers is leaving the hospital to continue recovering at home.
Thank you to @BellevueHosp for the superb care they give our officers.
Congratulations to Dr. Robert Montgomery, who received the Order of Merit medal yesterday from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his medical contributions to the people of Ukraine.

So proud of our PGY 3 resident Dr. Jon Burke and recent NYU Grossman SOM graduate, now UCSF surgery intern, Dr. Natalie Escobar for presenting their research during the AAST Poster Session! They both did an excellent job! @NYUGSOM_SurgRes@nyugrossman@UCSFSurgery#AAST2023
Congratulations to Dr. Robert Montgomery and the entire team at @nyulangone for achieving this incredible milestone in xenotransplantation! https://t.co/KjmiVJcMuM
"Last year, nearly 50,000 people lost their lives due to firearms. Gun-related injuries are now the leading cause of accidental death in children. Gun violence is a public health crisis." - Dr. Leandra Krowsoski, Assoc Trauma Medical Director #GVAM
