3D Character Artist Andrea Orioli presented a smart material for Substance 3D Painter, which allows for painting Normal Maps within the software without additional baking.

You can cook a dreamUV hotspot atlas in ucupaint just by baking a texture on a bunch of boxes 🥰
You get game-ready edgewear on any geometry in one click made entirely in Blender. Both addons are free and open-source too
Blender became so goated its not even funny anymore
During a solar eclipse, the gaps between leaves on trees act as multiple pinhole cameras,
and each gap projects its own crescent-shaped image of the eclipsed sun onto the ground.

🎓Learn how to create a powerful Torn Fabric smart material in a matter of seconds in my latest video series (AAA) Pro Tips!
This smart material can be used on virtually any 3D asset.

In this video, the steps are as follows:
1. Create a base fill layer containing no information. We will use this layer to call out the core effects. Add a black mask to this layer and inside that mask add a paint layer and draw a simple pill shape.
2. Next, add a blur directional and be sure the direction is the same direction that your fabric is flowing to.
3. Add a UV border generator set to subtract to mask out any uv seams followed by an anchorpoint. Additionally, add a messy Fibers 3 fill layer set to overlay.
4. Use a levels to adjust the mask along with a sharpen filter. A warp filter should also be added to introduce some randomness. Add an anchor point at the top of the mask as well.
5. Create another fill layer with its opacity channel set to black and apply a black mask to the fill layer. Inside its mask retrieve the anchorpoint information from the previous fill layer.
6. Create an additional fill layer with a bright diffuse color along with a black mask applied to it. Add the anchorpoint information from the previous mask into its mask as well and this should give us some white fibers on the edges.
Now we have a torn fabric effect wherever we paint using the paint layer created inside the callout mask!

@mikefranchina_ Hey Mike, I’m quite familiar with InD as I use it for freelance work time to time on nothing sexy enough to feature on my portfolio but I guess you can find some examples on my website related to Warhammer 40k artworks. Cheers man, keep up the good work!
This week in 3D...
How to achieve Hollywood visuals on a budget
A fun explainer video on the efficient VFX of Godzilla Minus One. A key innovation was actually the team structure; the Director cut out layers of decision makers by giving notes direct to the artists on the same floor. But that was only possible because he is a VFX artist himself. Watch it: https://t.co/bcocjQoT1g
Blender to finally get layered animation
The long requested feature by animators is coming soon. “Project Baklava” will bring the ability to try out multiple takes by muting and unmuting different layers. No ETA on it's release, but it’s part of the "Animation 2025" project, so one would assume 2025. Read more: https://t.co/jQYj2vDAFQ
SORA: a “paradigm shift in content creation”
From the always excellent Mike Seymore: “SORA is a mic dropping – jaw dropping – drop everything – wake-up call to artists and TDs worldwide to get fluent in Machine Learning and modern AI tools… As we stand on the brink of this new era, it’s clear that diffusion models are not just another tool in the digital artist’s toolkit—they represent a paradigm shift in content creation.” Read to the end to hear his optimistic view on jobs: https://t.co/ZNrqnyQB9T
Life update: Next week I’m moving from my home country of Australia to the US (Los Angeles specifically). Kids, wife and all! I’ll share more on why at a later date, but I'll be offline for a couple of weeks as I pack and unpack far too many belongings.

That moment when ZWrap works perfectly with 200 match points. Love this software, saved me hundreds of hours on retopology, absolute must for any 3D character artist
Generative 3D is on the rise!
Last week we not only got one new 3D object generation method, but four!
Two of them even with the same name 🤪
Let’s take a quick look:
This is huge!!
Spline now supports Gaussian splats 👀
You can now capture anything in 3D from your phone with Luma, export the .ply file, import it into spline, crop, adjust, and embed on your site.
Luma + Spline + Webflow is an insane 3D workflow 🔥
Turning movies shots into 3D scenes using 3D Gaussian Splats 🤯
Next experiment will be about taking footages from movies, turning them in 3D and then take them into @UnrealEngine to add/edit.
Remember this scene ?
Less than 31 hours since OpenAI started dropping the ChatGPT vision feature on pro users...
People are scratching their heads in disbelief.
