New paper from me and @angrist_noam!
We look at targeted educational instruction in developing countries.
We find that implementation quality strongly predicts program treatment effects.
We run a new RCT attempting to improve implementation and see large increases in impact!
New study on the distinction b/w empathy and compassion. We find empathy = more self focus & negative emotion, whereas compassion = more other focus & positive emotion. Moral implications?

“Adaptions occur not just on the level of ‘what works’ for pupils but also on the level of ‘how to make it work’.”
Understanding implementation is therefore critical for identifying & redressing the barriers in our systems, which give rise to disparities in student outcomes.

In 2018, "Parachute use to prevent death and major trauma when jumping from aircraft: randomized controlled trial" was published in the British Medical Journal.
It sought to determine if wearing a parachute when jumping from a plane had any impact on survivability.
It did not.
10/10. Funders & policymakers should align resources & incentives with these goals to support research & practice communities in collaborating to achieve more equitable outcomes through more equitable implementation in our education systems.
1/n. Why apply #ImpSci to education? Since learning emerges from rapidly-changing experiences & high-intensity social interactions “dense w/ discretionary spaces” (@deborah_ball), instruction must continually adapt. @wtgrantfdn https://t.co/xIuyObwkwm

9/n. Three goals: (1) Engineering – Improve education practice & outcomes. (2) Science – Advance evidence base about what works, for whom, when, & why. (3) #Metascience – Build evidence base about #ResearchUse & #ResearchImpact in education.
