How do you figure the 1980s debt crisis, the dot-com bust, the 2008 financial crisis? all with fiat money. It's just ahistorical to say the gold standard is responsible for debt cycles.
The past 70 years of fiat money and Pax Americana is a generational aberration built off the decimation of Europe and financing of the reconstruction of the world after WWII. In addition, the Cold War pushed us to make massive interior investments in infrastructure and manufacturing.
We've drawn down these investments with zero replacement. There's no reason to believe the past 70 years are homeostatically stable. We are currently incapable of building infrastructure at a reasonable pace and price.
I would be sensitive to the benefits of inflation for young consumers if the biggest necessities in health, housing, and education weren't growing faster than inflation, which puts a very real burden on the young, hurts family formation, and benefits the old. What good is a cheaper relative student loan payment if the principal grows faster?
We're leveraging our kids to pay for current entitlements for the old. The demographic shift, entitlements, and growing debt are unsustainable. This trifecta created a society with a complete misunderstanding of capital, labor, and productivity.
The young are looking to rent freezes to solve housing shortages. It's like turning to crack to treat alcoholism.
There's a risk of being a little Malthusian here, predicting doom and gloom that never comes, though it's impossible to disentangle the reflexive impact that sounding the alarm has on mitigating disaster.
Yes, price volatility is the market working.
That is the point after all of a free market.
Central planning price stability with obligatory inflation isn’t a grand solution. It’s just borrowing stability from the future.
There are many ways to temper speculation and asset price swings other than debasing your currency and leveraging your kids.
Just got off the phone with Rhode Island Medical Imaging. I can only get my images on a CD for $25. They use PowerShare by Nuance (Microsoft) for digital imaging sharing, but that’s not an option for patients.
Also, there’s no way to call medical records, you must only leave a message for a callback within 24hrs. I got through by calling the prior authorization line (obviously picked up cause $$$)
This level of patient hostility is just cartoonish villain behavior. RIMI has a state monopoly protected by CON laws. It’s all so unethical and normalized. Legalized corruption.
Pray for change to disrupt the regulatory capture in health care.
It’s wild to look at the human squalor, boarded up stores, and shabby $3m homes, and conclude it must be managed well cause lots of residents are super rich. The opposite seems more true.
Prior innovation centers (Athens, Rome, Venice, Florence, Genoa, Amsterdam, Paris, London) left timeless beauty and infrastructure.
As it stands, SF has nearly nothing to show after giving birth to the most magical technology in human history.
@YIMBYLAND I mean, I hate this aesthetic. It’s a big reason no one wants to build. They don’t want it to look like Hong Kong.
But you’re totally right about squandered wealth and just overall sadness.
@bmj_latest Fauci did this all by himself.
Birx and Murthy helped.
Here’s an idea for ambitious scientists, drop your prestige politics and moral grandstanding. Instead, follow the data and speak the truth.
@berkie1@ronrule The solution is...
Mixed-use buildings, 7-10 stories.
Townhomes, 3-7 stories.
...we need to build millions of these.
It'll give the young and old a place to live and take pressure off the single-family homes. Right now, we have extremely little of this inventory.
need you all to know that in june 2027 The Whale by Dorte Mandrup opens in Andenes, Norway. it’ll be an immersive museum dedicated to whales and the ocean, and the building is designed to look like it’s emerging from the Arctic coastline, like a whale. also, the curved roof will be walkable
I get this a bit. Beauty definitely pleases. And we're missing a lot of that.
But we're also the most pleasure seeking society that's ever existed. We can't solve the ugliness by seeking more pleasure. Pleasure seeking itself is ugly.
Creation is act of faith. The pleasure we feel from something beautiful comes from the underlying pain and sacrifice required to create it.
There's a reason people of faith create enduring beauty. It's not a specific creed or dogma, but the faithful actions that are themselves beautiful.
Beauty is a material product of spiritual faith.
@jaketapper Millennials?!
FDR and LBJ. The missionary and GI generation created all entitlements, bureaucracies, and fiat money.
You don’t even know American history and basic math.
@DistractOrbs@memeticsisyphus If you replaced all the pitbulls with retrievers, the violence would go down, regardless of owner.
The “shitty people” you’re referring to select pitbulls because they’re more aggressive than retrievers. Genetics have much more impact than training.
SpaceX says that "by the end of 2028, @Starlink Mobile will have already rapidly upgraded the constellation by launching thousands more satellites, providing continuous full global coverage to become the first—and most likely the only—direct-to-device provider to offer true coverage in high-latitude polar regions," according to a new filing.
SpaceX added that Starlink Mobile will be able to provide its partners with life-saving data services by Q3 2027, with voice following within months.
All of these upgrades will be possible thanks to the company's next-generation Starlink Mobile V2 satellites, which will deliver 5G speeds from space with 100x the data density of the current V1 generation satellites.
No kudos.
He led the Covid response for Biden. Two years into the pandemic. The lab leak data was out. He towed the party line, against colleagues and science.
The time to make a principled stand is long passed. Now, he’s just saving himself from the burning building. Nothing noble here.
