Ms @GlennaWPLG is frightfully thick/dense/ignorant: "Genocide is the internationally recognized legal term defined by the United Nations as acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. When applied, it is referred to as a religious genocide or specifically by the event, such as the Bosnian genocide or the Rohingya genocide". The specific genocide of Jews by the Nazis was called Shoah. The current #GazaGenocide is of Palestinians by the 🇮🇱 junta military backed by many in its society.
Dear Melanie Phillips,
I am a historian of Palestine, specializing on the period of this tweet. Almost everything you wrote is fiction. Let's review.
Melanie:
“When organized Jewish colonization began in 1882, there were fewer than 150,000 Arabs in the land."
Reality:
There were 500,000. The authoritative source on population of late Ottoman Palestine is Justin McCarthy's The Population of Palestine: Population History and Statistics of the Late Ottoman Period and the Mandate (Columbia University Press, 1990). The population of Palestine in 1882 was at a minimum 468,089 people (ibid, p.10, see screenshot). This undercounted Bedouins and nomads. The actual figure is probably more like 500,000. https://t.co/b49x7c8cq8
Melanie:
"The Arab population was small and limited until Jewish resettlement restored the barren lands and drew Arabs to it from neighboring countries .... The great majority of the Arab population in recent decades were comparative newcomers—either late immigrants or descendants of persons who had immigrated into Palestine in the previous 70 years”:
Reality:
The book that makes a version of this argument is Joan Peter's From Time Immemorial. Turns out Peters invented data, fabricated statistics. The whole book is a fraud. Thoroughly debunked by Norman Finkelstein, Yehoshua Porath and others. Citing this book is the equivalent of citing a scientific paper arguing the world is flat. 0 historians believe that "a great majority of the Arab population... were... newcomers". You are just outing yourself as historically illiterate.
Melanie:
“The Arabs have crowded into the country and multiplied …”Winston Churchill, 1939.
Reality: Alas, a quote from a British imperialist who visited Palestine once in 1921 and whose knowledge of migation patters in the Arab East in the 1920s and 1930s rounded down to 0.
Melanie:
"People used to come from all over the Middle East to work in Jaffa and the whole of Palestine. From Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Yemen, Hijaj, Marrakesh, from everywhere. Tens of thousands of workers”:
Reality:
Regional migration was not uncommon, before, during and after Zionist immigration. Palestinians went to Lebanon, Syria and Egypt, Egyptians and Syrians came to Palestine. But, as the quote indicates, we are talking thousands, possibly tens of thousands. In the 1920s-1930s, the population of Palestine went from 750K-1.5M. Indeed, there were thousands, perhaps even tens of thousands of people, who migrated to and from Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt during this period. Perhaps a few percentage points of the population were migrants!?! Melanie, you have essentially undermined your entire argument by quoting "tens of thousands" out of a population of a million. You are saying the migrant population was somewhere between 1-10%. That's the point I'm making too!
Melanie:
Encyclopaedia Britannia 1911 listed more than fifty languages being spoken in Palestine including Czech, Finnish, Hindustani, Hebrew, Arabic, Dutch, Kurdish, Russian, Serbian, Syrian and Turkish.
Reality:
Indeed, 90% of Palestine spoke Arabic in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth centuries. There were also many internationals based in Palestine for a wide range of reasons. We are talking about a few thousand people out of 600,000+ on the eve of WWI. Another stunning revelation by Melanie.
Melanie:
“‘In the Gaza district they are mostly of Egyptian origin; elsewhere they are of the most mixed race. UK government handbook 1920."
Reality:
A British colonial official went around Gaza and the rest of Palestine and surveyed the native population to understand their ancestral origins. I'm joking. They didn't do that. They just pulled this observation out of their ass and presented it as fact. Or maybe they read that in a book of another Orientalist, who himself made it up. Serious historians cite these anecdotes as reflections of how British imperialist imagined natives, rather than as accurate scientific facts about the racial composition of the natives. Melanie once against outs herself as historically illiterate.
Melanie:
"Between 1922 and 1946 the Arab population of Palestine increased by 118 per cent. Roosevelt concluded in 1939 that “Arab immigration into Palestine since 1921 has vastly exceeded the total Jewish immigration during the whole period”. Your ignorance is painful."
Reality:
Pure fiction. Between 1922-1938, about 300,000 Jews moved to Palestine. There is 0 evidence to believe "vastly more" than 300,000 Arabs migrated to Palestine during the Mandate period. As we already said, 0 historians believe that, because there is 0 evidence to believe. That's why you didn't cite any (not fraudulent) historians, because there aren't any. There simply was no mass migration of hundreds of thousands of Arabs into Palestine, that's just a Zionist fantasy to write into history a land that was empty.
All of this is further undermined by the fact that a breakthrough 2020 study found that Palestinians derive 81 to 87 per cent of their ancestry from Bronze Age Levantines. https://t.co/2XVy6lvBDP
In other words, the modern Palestinian people have been living in Palestine, by and large, for literally millenia.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Muammar Gaddafi gave up his nuclear program in 2003.
He negotiated. He complied. He handed over the centrifuges and the documentation and accepted international inspectors and did everything the West said a responsible leader should do.
He believed the deal.
He believed that compliance would produce security.
In 2011, NATO bombed his country for seven months.
Hillary Clinton, upon hearing of his death, after he had been captured, sodomized with a bayonet, and killed by a mob, appeared on camera and laughed:
"We came, we saw, he died."
Kim Jong-un watched this.
The Iranian leadership watched this.
Every government on Earth that was considering what compliance with Western demands actually produces watched this.
Gaddafi is the lesson.
Not the lesson the West wants to teach.
The lesson history actually teaches.
The empire does not reward disarmament.
It schedules it.
@BigBlockVette69@EliClifton@GuardianUS And what happened to Bush after that? Why would a seasoned politician who dismantled the Soviet Union and lead one of the most successful military operations lose to a young, inexperienced promiscuous Clinton?
VIDEO | "One Jewish life is worth ten million ... Because God chose us. You are jealous."
An Israeli settler lawyer who represents settlers accused of attacking Palestinians told the BBC that Israel should "kill everyone" in the villages of Tel in retaliation for the killing of a single Israeli.
"One Jewish life is worth ten million," said Yehuda Shimon, a resident of the illegal Havat Gilad settlement. When asked whether his remarks were racist, he replied: "Yes, I know. But this is the truth. Because God chose us. You are jealous."
A thought about the UN Partition Plan of Nov. 1947:
In Nov. 1947, the United Nations voted to partition Palestine into Jewish and Arab States. This is how it is always framed.
While the Jews owned 6% of the land and constituted 30% of the population, they received 56% of Palestine. The Palestinians owned the vast majority of the land and constituted 66% of the population yet were allotted 42% of Palestine, Jerusalem serving as an international zone.
The Arab state would have been 99% Palestinian Arab and 1% Jewish while the Jewish state would have been 55% Jewish and 45% Palestinian Arab.
The common framing that this was a "Partition Plan" is a misnomer, for almost no Jews had to be partitioned.
The Jewish colonies in Palestine remained almost entirely intact. Almost none of them would have fallen within the borders of the proposed Arab State.
The UN plan, instead, was a Palestinian partition plan. It partitioned Palestinians.
Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians would now find themselves inside a state that considered them an inherent, existential security and demographic threat, divided from the more than a million that would have fallen in the Arab State.
If you frame the Partition Plan by who rather what was partitioned, it should be called the Plan to Partition Palestinians from Palestinians.
Here is the question that European civilization has never answered:
At what point, in the five hundred years of colonial practice, should a European person have been expected to know that what was happening was wrong?
Not 1945. That is too easy, and too convenient.
1904, when the German Empire issued a written extermination order against the Herero people and generals carried it out and soldiers followed orders and administrators recorded the deaths and the skulls were shipped to universities for racial science.
At that point, should someone have known?
1890, when the systematic amputations in the Congo were being photographed by missionaries and the photographs were being published in European newspapers and reformers were raising the alarm and Leopold II was receiving those reformers in his palace and explaining that the civilizing mission required certain difficult measures.
At that point?
1830, when the Trail of Tears was a policy debated in the United States Congress and approved by elected representatives and challenged by lawyers and litigated to the Supreme Court, which ruled against it, and then carried out anyway.
At that point?
1619?
1492?
The question matters because the defense of European civilization against the charge that the Holocaust was colonialism coming home always rests on the assumption that colonial violence was invisible, unexamined, a product of its time.
It was not invisible.
It was photographed and debated and reported and litigated.
It was chosen.
At every decision point, by specific people with names and offices and moral agency, the choice was made to continue.
The Holocaust produced Nuremberg because the victims were European and the defendants were the enemies of the victorious powers.
The colonial period produced nothing comparable because the victims were not European and the defendants were the victorious powers.
That is the only reason one has a trial and the other has a museum of natural history.
Same civilization.
Same logic.
Different documentation.
@Leary4Frank@NicholasMorto11 In Arabic literature, we have entire books and numerous chapters about jokes, humor and anecdotes that were authored more than a thousand years ago!
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz on Lebanon:
I said that Southern Lebanon would become Gaza. We would apply the Rafah model.
We would destroy everything there. We would deal with them in exactly that way.
And that is what we did.
The infrastructure has been destroyed. Homes in 24 villages along the border—villages that had existed for hundreds of years and were used by Hezbollah as military outposts against Israel—have been demolished.
The army systematically flattened the villages with bulldozers and explosives. Ninety percent of the houses are gone. Between 15,000 and 20,000 homes have been destroyed.
