Kenneth Clark in the final scene of 'Civilisation' in 1969. 55 years later and that is still true, although the material forces at our command – in terms of information processing power scarcely imaginable in the 1960s – has been deployed to a significant degree to assist our delusions of liberating ourselves from the material.

But nothing has yet emerged to fill the void in our cultural and political imaginations. Marxism killed Christendom but was itself doomed to a vanishingly short life, doomed by a dreadfully inaccurate theoretical model of human behaviour, a model which most of us currently alive absorbed without even knowing we were doing so.

And so, "We are waiting" (still) "not for Godot, but for another—doubtless very different—St. Benedict." As we were in 1981, and 1969.
