Africa carries a major share of the global disease burden, yet still depends heavily on external systems for financing, vaccines, and health commodities.
Is this model sustainable in today’s geopolitical climate?

Ahead of the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, this #MaternalMonday shines a spotlight on a preventable and treatable childbirth injury that continues to affect the health, dignity and wellbeing of women and girls globally.
Nearly half a million women and girls are estimated to be living with obstetric fistula worldwide, with thousands of new cases occurring every year, often due to prolonged obstructed labour and limited access to timely, quality maternal healthcare.
The continued existence of obstetric fistula is a reminder that far too many women are still being left behind during pregnancy and childbirth.
Through the Integrated Fistula Programme, @Amref_Kenya , in partnership with @MPESA_FDN, @FDSAfrica and Royal Media Services, is supporting efforts to strengthen awareness, expand access to fistula care and advance the routinisation of screening in Migori, Bungoma, Kiambu and Kilifi counties.
Every woman deserves safe childbirth. Every newborn deserves a healthy start to life. Everywhere.

She walks miles for care.
Waits!
Hopes she is not too late.
Every day, 700+ women die from preventable pregnancy complications.
This is not a lack of solutions.
It is a failure of access. 🧵
70% of maternal deaths happen in Africa.
Yet we already have the tools to prevent them.
The challenge?
Getting those tools to women on time.
At @Amref_Worldwide, we are working with governments and partners to change that:
✔ Training frontline health workers
✔ Strengthening health systems
✔ Expanding access to lifesaving tools
Because when care reaches women in time,
lives are saved.
No woman should die giving life.
We invite you to partner with us, and let’s save many more lives across the continent.

A defining moment for maternal health in #Africa!
Today, at #IMNHC2026, we officially launched the SUPREME initiative, a bold new partnership to tackle two of the leading causes of maternal deaths: pre-eclampsia and maternal anemia.
Every year, tens of thousands of women die from these conditions, even though we already have the tools to prevent and treat them. The challenge is not innovation, but access.
Supported by @UNITAID and co-implemented with @CHAI_health, SUPREME brings together a powerful consortium, including @Jhpiego, @NGOSolthis, @MarktAccessAfri, @WACIHealth, @Auruminstitute, and @ConceptFNDN, to change this reality across Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Senegal, and Tanzania.
What makes SUPREME different is its end-to-end approach, addressing the full product access pathway, from innovation and market shaping to service delivery and community uptake.
Through its dual model,
🔹 SUPREME SECURE – strengthening supply, markets, and product availability
🔹 SUPREME LIFELINES – ensuring the right care reaches women at the point of need,
the initiative bridges the gap between #innovation and real impact among underserved communities.
At Amref Health Africa, we are proud to lead the LIFELINES component, working with governments, health workers, and communities to embed these solutions into strong, responsive antenatal care systems.
Because saving lives is not just about having the right tools. It’s about ensuring they are accessible, trusted, and delivered at scale.
By 2029, this initiative aims to create the conditions needed to drive lasting reductions in maternal and neonatal mortality.

📌Last week in #Zanzibar, @AmrefTanzania, in collaboration with @mohznz1, hosted a consultative meeting on phase two of the @AfricaCDC Saving Lives and Livelihoods Project in Tanzania.
📌 The meeting was attended by representatives from @mohznz1 and the District Health Management Teams (DHMT) from five districts in Unguja and Pemba.
With support from @MastercardFdn, this phase focuses on several key activities, including routine immunization to reach zero-dose children through outreach services, completing the vaccination of healthcare workers (HCWs) and vulnerable groups, supporting youth and high-risk populations, including the elderly, individuals with non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and those with comorbidities such as People Living with HIV (PLHIV), TB, and Leprosy.

Most of us will have seen the all too familiar charity appeals showing an African child with a seemingly full stomach and flies on their face. This imagery, often used outside of the African continent, shapes audience perceptions and understandings of international development and, most importantly, the places and people shown in the images.
Global health and fundraising campaigns can have unintended effects. Language and imagery used in these campaigns can create dissonance among the ideas promoted by the campaign and the reader, where campaigns reinforce existing societal norms and behaviors. Efforts on fundraising to “save Africa” have done more to reinforce negative stereotypes about the continent.
The consequences are far-reaching: Africa No Filter has shown that such stereotypes increase borrowing costs for African countries, costing billions annually.
