While freezing strawberries, Frozen🍄Lila's queue continues to expand, yet she maintains a cheerful expression, engaging with visitors, addressing inquiries about ride durations, and even assisting a misplaced child in locating his family close to the carousel.

In this age of email and WhatsApp / Instagram , _ चिठ्ठी आई है....by Pankaj Udhas_ still touches a raw nerve.
But why am I talking about this? While the excitement over rising property rates and luxurious apartments in cities like Gurgaon and Mumbai is palpable, I see a different narrative emerging. This is a scenario that many of us will likely witness unfolding in the near future: EMPTY HOMES.
Recently, I visited my hometown and couldn't shake off a sense of eeriness—something I also noticed during my tenure in Punjab, the villages - pinds- are increasingly becoming old aged and/or more and more locked houses are added every year. A trend that's becoming visible across the country.
During the 80s and 90s, many middle-class parents understood that education was crucial for success. They prioritised providing their children with the best education, which often resulted in opportunities for them to pursue careers in metro cities or abroad and eventually start their own families.
In smaller towns, homes built with pride by parents are often left empty and locked as they pass away. This trend is expected to rise with an aging population, providing fewer incentives for those living in cities or abroad to return to their roots.
I hear that this is more visible in Punjab with families leaving for foreign shores in hope of a better life.
We must reflect: Do we upgrade infrastructure in smaller cities to make them livable, or enhance the ecosystem with economic activities, medical facilities, and other amenities to attract future generations?

I hope the chitti comes early and we are able to turn this around.
Not Just a Banker, PSBians are Super Heroes.
Concerns about misselling through bancassurance are widespread. Reports on this issue raise alarms for the entire banking system. Fortunately, both the government and regulators, including RBI and IRDA,acknowledge the issues . They are actively taking steps to address it, aiming for a resolution that benefits all stakeholders.
Of course, I am strictly against setting unrealistic expectations or making such targets a substantial part of the appraisal process. Several banks are already moving away from such strategies, disassociating themselves from "campaign modes" for pushing so-called "wealth businesses."
However, it looks like there is resistance from some bankers on social media groups when it comes to pursuing anything beyond core banking activities.
In the evolving financial landscape, bankers play a larger role beyond being mere "safe keepers of money"; they are also "protectors and growers." In my view, a new-age banker should be:
1. Educator, as in financial literacy. You may underestimate your power, but being financially literate is a life-saving skill today. Every day, we read reports about how some agent sold an insurance policy to a retired senior citizen. If you can help such people be aware of their financial rights, you are doing a great social service.
2. Financial Planner: Providing sound advice can assist individuals in navigating their personal finance journey, protecting their hard-earned savings, and potentially earning them substantial returns through wise investments. Ultimately, this approach not only benefits individuals but also brings more business to the bank.
3. Fact Checker: Yes, it may sound strange, but people frequently turn to bankers for advice beyond financial matters. Whether it is inquiring about high-return schemes or checking the credibility of builders while taking home loans. I personally have seen parents asking bankers, when taking an education loan, about the college and its placement record. If you can provide them with the right information or guide them to the right source, this will help build long-lasting relationships.
Not all superheroes wear a cape. We all understand the difficult situations and stress that bankers, mostly PSBians, work in. I am not asking you to become a social service worker, educator, or some sort of influencer. Your role as a banker provides you ample opportunities to cover all such aspects.
You can do it !
And trust me, this will also help you grow as a person. After all, a job is not everything :)

*Branch Banker?*
You can have a fan base too.
One of the stark observations I made during my travels through the UK and Europe was that India is far ahead when it comes to digital payments. While a QR code card has become ubiquitous in India, most of these so-called advanced nations still rely on credit card transactions, often struggling with POS machines. There are reports that by June we will have crossed 10 billion Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions. NPCI is already partnering up with other regulated entities in foreign countries, and the latest is that a highly digitally advanced nation like Japan may also join this framework.
While all these statistics augur well for the economy and country at large, a pertinent question is: What is in it for the banker who is working on the ground?
At the branch level, there is a lot of stress, including unruly customers. It is not easy and may require more than just banking skills. But if we empower and educate those who need it most, we too can have your own fan base. Remember, the postman in the good old days, and how revered was he not just as a messenger but also as a friend and guide.
Sharing a few tips from my personal experience:
1. If customers adopt technology that makes your life easier. So, educate them. Like informing them that Indians travelling abroad can now pay foreign merchants via UPI in UAE, Singapore, Nepal, and Bhutan. This will make them rely on you more, and we all know that banking is about trust.
2. By informing them about the benefits, we are also empowering our customers, especially those who are new to the formal banking system. Our role as a banker also transcends into being a teacher and a well-meaning guide for such customers, who have just started their banking journey.
3. We also need to make them aware of the perils of digital banking, like online fraud. Relationship building is the key to being a successful banker.
