RTÉ News: Restaurant closures since January may cost economy €288m
A new report published today by the Restaurants Association of Ireland (RAI) this morning estimates that every time a restaurant, café or other food-led business shuts its doors for good, it could result in the State losing out on a total of up to €1.36m in value each year and 22 people losing their jobs on average.
The €1.36 million figure is an accumulation of lost wage payments, payroll taxes, VAT receipts, commercial rates, water charges and also accounts for the knock-on impact a closure has on spending in the local economy and on local suppliers.
The RAI wants to see a return of the 9% VAT rate, but for food-related businesses only, which the Department of Finance has said will cost €545m a year.
As part of the report, it claims that if 400 restaurants eventually close, the State will begin losing more money than it would have cost it to lower the VAT rate.

A new report by the Climate and Health Alliance has suggested the Irish diet and food system is like a slow-motion disaster, fuelling premature death and disability due to diet-related chronic diseases https://t.co/OZwxMsHkhJ
