Endlessly grateful for the honesty and truth that @heymrsbond brings to the table every single time.
We love your children. We do not want to die for them. We want to LIVE ALONGSIDE them. We want to build a full, meaningful world in tandem with them.
We don't know whether it was smartphones/social-media or edtech that was the bigger contributor to the decline in education outcomes that began in the 2010s. But new revelations show the tricks Meta, Snap, and Tiktok used to lure students during the school day.
Still more reasons to be technoskeptical

Phone-free schools and the recent parent-led EdTech pushback sweeping the nation show that families have agency in challenging the idea more tech is always better for kids. I love to see @rweingarten and teachers joining in support.
AFT is well-positioned to make real demands of Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic, and they should use that leverage.

Let me trace the timeline here because nobody's connecting it.
Step 1: Scrape the entire internet. Every book, every article, every conversation, every piece of art, every forum post. Do it without asking. Do it without paying.
Step 2: Train a model on all of it. Call it "artificial intelligence."
Step 3: Go to BlackRock's Infrastructure Summit and announce: "We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it from us on a meter."
Step 3 is where you sell people's own knowledge back to them. On a meter.
They took the collective output of human thought, compressed it into a model, and now they want to charge you by the token to access a version of what you and everyone you know already created.
One Reddit user put it perfectly: "They stole all this data from us, the people, our life's work, creativity, art, by devouring the internet and blowing through all copyright laws. Now they want to sell it back to us in the form of a utility."
Imagine if someone photocopied every book in the public library, burned the library down, and then opened a subscription service for the copies.
That's the metered intelligence business model.
And they're pitching it to infrastructure investors as though they invented water.
"Imagine if someone photocopied every book in the public library, burned the library down, and then opened a subscription service for the copies."
Yes, more or less this
The mechanism is specific and worth reading carefully.
Able-bodied adults without dependents must now document 80 hours per month of work, training, or volunteering to maintain SNAP. Job searching - actively looking for work - does not count. Miss the threshold over any three-month period: ineligible for three years.
The exemption that previously protected former foster youth from this time limit has been eliminated. A population already more likely to face housing instability, academic disruption, and unemployment now runs the same clock as everyone else.
The average SNAP benefit is $6 per day. That is what this policy fight costs at the individual level.
The bill that built this requirement cut $187 billion from SNAP in the same legislation that extended tax cuts for corporations and wealthier Americans. That contrast is in the record.
Indeed, unprecedented apology. The Catholic Church was the LARGEST single owner of enslaved people in the Americas. Made its wealth from slavery. John Paul II rehearsed a rambling apology when he visited Gorée Island back in the 1990s. #slaveryarchive
Before pride month starts im just gonna say this:
-men’s mental health month is in November
-straight pride isn’t a thing. Nobody has ever been oppressed or killed for being straight
-veterans get 2 months. May and November
So do some research before complaining :)
My last rent increase was because the landlord noticed that the market rate for the area had gone up
Not because his costs went up, but because other landlords were charging more in my area and my landlord felt left out and thought I should pay him more for the same thing
found out my psychiatrist used AI notes when, instead of giving me a sleep medication for PTSD from assault and being drugged with opioids, they prescribed me opioids
When you see somebody calling it "literary gatekeeping" to suggest that you need to read *all* of a book to read all of a book, you start to understand why some people think writing a 10-page paper without ChatGPT is impossible.
We are cooked.
If New York City ran its schools like you ran Amazon, the teachers would be on welfare and the students would be peeing and pooping in plastic bags under their desks. What an idiotic thing to say.
“In practice, however, technology is never neutral, because it takes on the characteristics of those who devise it, finance it, regulate it and use it.”
THANK YOU POPE LEO FOR SAYING THIS.
Time for the “technology is a tool with no inherent moral position” idea to die!
Sam Altman: “A kid born today will never be smarter than AI.”
They are framing humanity as inferior to AI so they can rewire our society and usher in their AI mass surveillance dystopia.
AI is not superior to humanity. It is fake. We are real. We must always put humanity first.
Students see no issue using AI to complete their assignment because they have been conditioned to treat schooling as a means to a capitalist end and not a tool for acquiring knowledge. The proliferation of AI is just making this very explicit for those who didn’t already know.
I spent the last week digging through old articles and studies on racist policy like segregation, redlining, war on drugs etc.
It’s SHOCKING how many “.gov” addresses and resources now end in “404 not found”
They’ve deleted so much nobody realizes is gone.
Pope Leo writes, “The speed and ease with which answers or summaries can be obtained risk extinguishing the desire to ask questions.” Curiosity and the human hunger to learn are under attack. They are trying to build a world in which no one *wants* to know anything.
To be clear, this isn’t a story of Alec Guinness being homophobic. Alec Guinness was bisexual and was arrested for cruising when he was younger. This is a very sad story of how queer people had to hide themselves and assimilate into a deeply homophobic industry.
