I like to thank ChatGPT when I use it, for two reasons. 1 - it just feels polite. 2 - when the AI’s take over maybe they will remember that I was nice to them.
In 2000, at the depth of the dot com crash, Reed Hastings and I tried to sell Netflix to Blockbuster for $50 million dollars. They laughed us out of the room.
Today, the company they could have bought for $50 million has a market cap north of $150 billion. And the company that once had 9,000 stores, is down to a single one.
But what lesson to take from this?
That it’s possible for a handful of people, with no prior experience in the video business, to take down a 6 billion dollar category leading company? Sure.
But I think the more important lesson - a lesson that Blockbuster learned too late - is simply this:
If you are unwilling to disrupt yourself, there will always be someone willing to disrupt your business for you.
here is GPT-4, our most capable and aligned model yet. it is available today in our API (with a waitlist) and in ChatGPT+.

it is still flawed, still limited, and it still seems more impressive on first use than it does after you spend more time with it.
@waronweakness I think a lot of people don’t see another viable option. It’s hard to build up enough runway or to start something profitable enough while working full time.
@ischafer Disney too. I think they’ve found that there’s limitations to the binge model. There is something fun about the constraint of having to wait for it to drop, building the anticipation is rewarding.
I worked with a 22 year old that learned to code.
I was 30 when I started to learn to code.
My friend was 49 when he made the transition to tech.
I worked with a PHENOMENAL woman who was 60 when she got her job as a frontend developer!
You absolutely got this!💪🏽
@elonmusk I think the better question is, what do you love about Twitter and how can it be even better at that? I love seeing experts break down important topics in real time. It’s tremendously valuable. I could do with more of that and less spammy content.
@lennysan I got a Wusthof chef’s knife on sale for more than half off last year during a sale at William’s Sonoma and it’s so much nicer than the other knives I have. Using it to cut things like tomatoes is oddly satisfying because it works so well.
