Increasing attention on oral language skills, vocabulary and content knowledge in the early years can build lifelong learning habits and accelerate literacy development. Summertime is great for informal conversations around and about your neighborhood.

I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to join 2 of my @ReadCLT teammates to talk with the amazing @FSP_Charlotte Student Leader Interns today about their opportunity to build Freedom School Scholars' listening comprehension skills this summer. What a great way to start my day.
@ReadCLT is hiring a Literacy Specialist. If you know someone passionate about early literacy, please share with them. We don't run programs, but rather help orgs that provide direct support to children, families, & schools. If interested please visit https://t.co/S1LtefM9ib
@jillbarshay@SusanBneuman And this one... Kim, Y. S. G. (2020). Simple but not simplistic: The simple view of reading unpacked and expanded. The Reading League Journal, 1(2), 15-34.
@jillbarshay@SusanBneuman In the interim, I'd recommend two papers: Cervetti, G. N., et al (2020). How the reading for understanding initiative’s research complicates the simple view of reading invoked in the science of reading. Reading Research Quarterly, 55, S161-S172.
"Mrs. Lee empowers her students with the tools, compassion, and structure to believe that they CAN!" a Bain Elementary parent said when nominating second-grade teacher Monica Lee as a Reading Hero.

Over the past year, @ReadCLT dug deeply into recent reading science on reading comprehension. The findings tell us we must focus on listening comprehension skills alongside word-reading skills to improve early literacy outcomes & close gaps. Change is within our reach.
@right2readproj Wonderful to see Carol Connor's groundbreaking work incorporated. She made really important contributions to the science of reading instruction. Her 'four types of reading instruction' is 1 of 3 models that inform our work at @ReadCLT.
@ramit I remember when my sister-in-law said to me 'there's no Sallie Mae for your retirement.' In an instant, that completely changed how I thought about prioritizing retirement vs paying for college.
Yesterday’s rain may have slowed us down but work on this incredible mural will continue next week. SO CLOSE! You can see the work in progress at @MorrisCostume on Monroe Road! #ReadTogetherCLT
2023 was @ReadCLT's most productive & impactful year. I'm excited about 2024 (we have big plans). Thanks to our supporters & partners who make this work possible. Thank you to my amazing team who show up every day with urgency & dedication. Change is within our reach!!
We’re so excited to share this video with you!
2023 was an incredible year at Read Charlotte, thanks to amazing partners, committed funders, and the many community members who are dedicated to helping improve early literacy in Mecklenburg County. https://t.co/95WDJj8I7P
I spent two days with a group of 50 multimillionaire entrepreneurs in Texas.
Here are 10 things I learned:
1. Extraordinary people are just ordinary people willing to play a game for an extraordinary length of time. Very few people are willing to play a game for decades. If you are, you have an unfair advantage.
2. Sharpen the axe before chopping down the tree. Most of these entrepreneurs spent years identifying their key i business insight. That might look like wasted time, but it allowed them to deploy their energy with 100 or 1000x leverage later on.
3. You’ve gotta like hitting the ball. Novak Djokovic is famous for saying that he has been able to perform at such an extraordinary level because he likes hitting a tennis ball. No matter what you’re doing, you’ll only be able to do it at the top 1% level if you enjoy doing it. You can fake it in the short term, but not for decades.
4. Content is an incredible form of business leverage. Warren Buffett was one of the OG business content creators via his annual shareholder letters. Using content to attract people to your ideas and thinking is a way to play business on Easy Mode.
5. Acting in service of others is the path to lasting fulfillment in business. Those who play the game on another level all seem to ground themselves in the service of others as opposed to personal financial goals. Create value, receive value.
6. Authenticity > Everything. Being true to your core values is as important in business as it is in life. You can fake a character for a day, a week, or a year, but you can’t fake it for decades.
7. Be the first reader. Stephen King once said, “I’m not only the writer, I’m the first reader.” Create something you would be thrilled to consume, whether content, products, or services. If you honor this high bar, you’ll be on the right track.
8. Do you know what you're saying YES to? Everyone talks about saying NO to things, but unless you truly know what you're saying YES to, you'll have a hard time saying NO to anything. For me, saying YES to meaningful work, my closest loved ones, and my health are non-negotiables.
9. The energy you bring to your home life will govern your relationships with your partner and children. There are seasons of life when your professional pursuits may take up more of your time, but you can still control the energy you bring home. When you're with your family, be WITH YOUR FAMILY. Present energy is what matters.
10. Hunt antelope, not field mice. Stop wasting your time and energy on small decisions with small rewards. Your energy is limited, use it to hunt the antelope.

Those were 10 key learnings that everyone needs to hear. If you enjoyed this or learned something, follow me @SahilBloom for more in future.
A nice coda to last week's 3-part series on @rwci and @RenWestEagles. And it illustrates the challenge of discussing test scores. Are these gains worth celebrating? Absolutely. Are results good enough? Absolutely not.

@SoniaCabell@SusanBneuman@TheDrPT@ReadCLT I've now read & highlighted 2/3 of the book. Half my team is reading, too. We're updating our strategies based upon what we've learned. Thanks to the editors and the authors for an incredible resource. We're already starting to put some ideas to work in Charlotte, NC.
Looking forward to using this new resource (edited by @SoniaCabell, @SusanBneuman & @TheDrPT) to sharpen the saw of the @ReadCLT team in Q3. So many important & useful topics in one volume. I can't wait.
