@nenshi Power generation of any kind is not not a replacement for hydrocarbon export. If it was, we wouldn't take the discount on our oil in an effort to get it out of alberta. Instead we'd convert to electricity right here and export that instead. But we don't.
@jesse_kleine The solution is easy. Do what Vietnam did. Eliminate rent control, and reduce tenant rights.
Supply will grow at breakneck speed and housing costs will go down.
@audricmoses I don't understand the negative reactions to his behaviour.
The interviewer loads his questions with negative characterizations of Pierre, and then doesn't even ask anything of substance.
You don't see that?
@RachelNotley Costs are high because building renewables requires new investment in transmission infrastructure.
That net new transmission infrastructure is utilized at a lower rate, and is uncoupled from net new demand.
Our power bills are higher because our power grid costs more.
@acoyne Sure that works if low-carbon alternatives are as equally available as the high-carbon choice.
What if the availability of low-carbon choices is unevenly distributed?
If availability varies within an industry where a single tax rate is applied, that's bad.
@altruafinancial Higher interest rates (which set your higher mortgage rates) are negatively impacting housing starts.
Housing starts drive vacancy rates, and vacancy rates drive shelter costs.
Shelter costs are the single largest domestic contributor to inflation.
1.4 Trillion dollars to build 3.5 million housing units at an average of 400K per unit (assuming walkup apartment buildings with 12 units, which are the cheapest per sq ft)
Amazing. A Globe and Mail article paints Alberta poorly by omitting relevant facts.

Coal phase out will complete in 2023. 7 years ahead of schedule
Only one coal plant left
Alberta has the fastest growing renewable power generation sector in Canada.
Stupid article of the day.
Any time someone claims that a shortage of land is a factor in housing costs, you know they got their degree from a cereal box.

@treelover380@KrystleMSudz@RachelNotley What? Who wouldn't rent out any free space they had if rent was skyrocketing and their costs were skyrocketing too?
As things get worse we will see more and more boarding style rentals. Not less.
The answer is simple. Encourage builders to build more.
More supply, less demand.
@mononclesteve @MikePMoffatt@maxfawcett It misses the point entirely. We need more rental stock. That's it.
But ontario and BC have dragged their supply growth with 30 years of rent control.
Convert 1 in 10 SFH lots into 6plex walkups and we double rental stock in Van and TO.
LIVE: After 8 years of Justin Trudeau, the cost of mortgages, rent, and down payments have doubled.
Trudeau’s inflationary deficits have driven up interest rates while local government gatekeepers block home construction.
Stop spending. Remove gatekeepers. Bring homes workers can afford.
