#UWJ201 #304 In lecture, we talked about public relations and the importance of maintaining a positive image for companies. How might public relations be connected to marketing strategies and advertising? How much might PR specialists be involved in marketing campaigns?
@aidanjourn201#UWJ201 #304 when covid first started and there wasn’t much known about the virus, there was so much conflicting messages as info was sent out without full understanding. Many were told inaccurate info, like it would be over by summer 2020. This added confusion to stressful times
@PaytonBecker7#UWJ201 #304 I’ve noticed a huge rise of hidden advertising on tik tok, where a user seemingly reviews a product on their own accord but they are actually paid by a company. As they seem to be “normal” people and the algorithm of the app is so advanced, it’s a good opportunity
@ecwalsh5 @prowag This reminds me of the idea of the attention economy. Since audience attention is the profit motive for the industry media outlets may cater more to what the public wants to hear or what’s already on the public agenda vs what we don’t want to hear or don’t know about #UWJ201 #314
@KennaCoan I agree that clip was scary! But to answer your question, I think it depends on the motives of the company, both methods will expand profit but I think horizontal ownership allows for a wider scope if you want to get out a certain message like in the Sinclair video #UWJ201 #304
#UWJ201 #314 although we have talked about several ways media has indirect effects on what people think, yesterday in lecture we talked about the Fox News effect which seems to be more of an outlier. Why might fox be more persuasive than other outlets?
@MataylaB I had not heard much about this issue before reading this article, so I would say sexual harassment in different industries such as journalism could definitely use more coverage and research overall in order to spread awareness #UWJ201 #304
@AnnabelBridges7 I think networking is a huge part of the industry and befriending other journalists could definitely help with journalists agenda setting #UWJ201 #304
#UWJ201 #304 McGarr’s article about journalisms sexual harassment problem reminded me of the movie Bombshell which is based on Fox News reporter Gretchen Carlson exposing the head of Fox for sexual harassment and sexism. It’s a complex issue, what are your thoughts on it?
@AnnabelBridges7 I wonder if the power the govt has over social media will change much at all, since each platform has its own user guidelines they can supposedly ban anyone according to their own agenda separate from the govt #UWJ201 #304
@isabellam1220 I was thinking about this as well! I agree with the idea from the McLeod article that media needs to do more thematic framing and further explain the events and underlying issues that led to the protests bc it seems ppl still don’t understand #UWJ201 #304
There were many great connections between the McLeod and Conrad article however a stat from the Conrad article to support the argument that protest coverage mainly focuses on dramatic individuals is that 93% of BLM protests were peaceful yet the coverage showed otherwise
In lecture we talked about how national media is more likely to be perceived as biased and therefore people don’t have as much confidence in national news as compared to local news sources. Why might this be the case, why is local news seen as less biased? #UWJ201 #304
@AlexaRappaport I agree, I believed I was immune as well, but I did the short writing assignment for this week, I realized I was wayy overthinking how my articles could make others feel about the health of our democracy #J201 #304
@hailey_dumont Good question! The first example that came to mind is the me too movement. In regards to sexual assault it takes courage to come forward, so oftentimes victims of an assaulter will stay silent until that silence is broken. #UWJ201 #304
@elliemilius1 Good question! Framing is basically the art of persuasion. I think to come up with a creative way to frame, journalists must think about what they want their audience to think about and what aspects they want to emphasize in order to highlight the best side of their argument.
