Large vendors with a history of reliable cash flow with negligible charge backs can negotiate to pay less to the processor. The genius of Stripe is putting a clean API over the absolutely insane ways money actually moves, combined with underwriting smaller businesses.
The real cost of being a payment processor for small businesses is that you’re on the hook for merchants who don’t deliver on their promises, through maliciousness or incompetence. You’re essentially underwriting everyone on your platform.
As someone who spent a few years in payments:
1. Stripe takes this much for small businesses. For large companies it’s less! It’s why eg Amazon uses Stripe vs building their own credit card processing!
2. Building *just* credit card processing is very expensive (cont’d)
@jherskowitz I'm also of the opinion that the timing of everybody repurchasing their libraries on CD in the decade before the switch to digital gave the music industry a broken sense of the baseline.
@jherskowitz There isn't enough transparency in the industry for people to even understand what they're asking for when they propose alternatives. We end up with speculation about what some other idealized system would do, without any grounding in the actual facts.
@jackdied I had that insight in September and ordered one; Lowe's cancelled it without delivering it. Ended up getting an Amazon Basics model by ordering it as part of a package with a cover; wasn't available standalone.
@jherskowitz Agreed! Looked like it was all bid up pretty high pretty quickly, though. I wonder how much it would cost to buy the TM and mint new ironic merch?
As a US business (and tech) community, I think we should be significantly clearer about our horror at, and opposition to, the atrocities being committed by the Chinese government against its own people.
