If @APPNA is being criticized for blurring Imran Khan's face in his iconic 1992 picture, this criticism did not arise overnight. It has a history rooted in the perception that @APPNA has been manipulated and influenced by the Pakistani establishment and government.

As the largest association of Pakistani-American physicians in the USA, APPNA's silence regarding the negligence and denial of proper medical treatment to one of Pakistan's most iconic figures (regardless of the fact that he is a politician) and his wife has raised serious questions within the Pakistani-American community. Being doctors, it is their medico-ethical responsibility to raise questions about medical deprivation of any Pakistani regardless of his political affiliation.

If we accept the APPNA president's explanation that he did not notice the error made by the decorators until he saw it on social media, then this reflects sheer incompetence on the part of the decoration committee. They were organizing APPNA's largest convention of the year, yet they failed to review the banners and display materials before they were put up.

I am aware that the same banner also included another picture of Imran Khan holding the Pakistani flag. However, that image was not nearly as prominent as the iconic 1992 photograph that was altered. In light of the criticism and the reaction from the Pakistani-American community, APPNA should recognize that it needs to review its policies when it comes to Pakistan.

The widespread reaction from the Pakistani-American community should serve as a wake-up call for APPNA.
If APPNA claims to be non-political, then altering the face of someone who is not only a political figure but also a philanthropist, a sportsman, and the apple of the eye of millions of Pakistanis is, in itself, a political act. Whether APPNA's action was a mistake or a deliberate act, it is condemnable in either case. If it was a mistake, it reflects incompetence. If it was deliberate, it reinforces the perception that APPNA is playing into the hands of the establishment. Either way, APPNA owes the Pakistani-American community a transparent explanation and a commitment to ensuring that such an incident is never repeated.
