Our Maria. So quintessentially generous in her grasp of the power of the arts to heal and make us whole. The news of her passing is truly devastating, difficult to accept and understand
Words fail, really.
Patrick was an integral part and big believer of our photography book “This is Rwanda” but most importantly an amazing human. He’ll be dearly missed.

The light we passed tonight was a promise made by everyone that was present to honor our history, uplift each other, and build a Rwanda rooted in hope and unity. #Kwibuka32#OurPast26
"Death did not want me, even though I sought it out many times as a release. Why was I spared when those better than me were taken? Survival is not a gift; it is a heavy coat that you can never take off. You carry the silence of the dead with you everywhere you go."

“Our deepest source of grief was always that we could not arrive earlier,” President Kagame said.
Let’s sit with what that grief means.
Inkotanyi did not arrive into victory. They arrived into evidence. Every kilometer they gained, they found more of what they had not been able to stop. More churches. More schools. More bodies. They advanced as fast as they could and still found silence where there should have been people.
That grief has no resolution.
It was carried into the rebuilding of this country, and it is in the foundation of everything standing today. »

Last night’s play #Inzibutso left me speechless… and in tears. Thank you @juniorrumaga & @malaikaWamahoro for creating something so necessary, so powerful, and so unforgettable 🙏🏾
@Our_Past_In is it available online?
What made it even more powerful is knowing it was brought to life by a generation that was barely born during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. And yet, they carried the weight of memory, pain, and truth with such depth… as if it lived within them.
Sitting there with my children, I felt something shift. This is how memory lives on. This is how we pass it forward… so they know, so they understand, so they remember. So that #NeverAgain is not just a phrase, but a responsibility.
The play held everything, the pain survivors carry, the silence and burden of perpetrators, and the fragile, powerful hope that rises after darkness. Combined with the testimonies, it felt almost too real… too close… too heavy to hold back tears.
And maybe that is the point.
What a deeply moving piece 💔🕯️

Dear @Our_Past_In and @Inkotanyi_C,
On behalf of many young people, we kindly ask you to consider organising more than one night of this event. Your initiative has become one of the most important spaces where we learn our history, reflect, and carry the memory forward.
We commend the previous editions and everyone who works tirelessly behind the scenes to make them successful.
There is nothing more disappointing than missing such an important event, even when it is streamed online. We hope you will take this request into consideration, thank you!
We are the generation that inherited what that grief built. Which means our goal is not to arrive, we are already here. Our duty is to make sure the question of arriving too late is never asked again. In memory. In truth-telling. In refusing to let hate and genocide ideology spread unchallenged in our region. In showing up, not only in remembrance, but in action. By doing, not just by being. That duty is the honour of our lives. 🤍

At a time of remembrance, the way our stories are told — and who tells them — matters deeply.
