Canadian, born in Brazil. Here's why.

The frontrunner's central promise is to free a man convicted of trying to overturn the last election. That man is his father. Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced by the Supreme Court to 27 years and 3 months for the 2022 coup plot. Flávio calls the trial a farce and promises an amnesty, or a presidential pardon if Congress won't deliver. Political science has a name for this: using an election to appeal a criminal verdict.

His brother Eduardo moved to the US and lobbied Washington for sanctions on Brazilian judges and tariffs on Brazilian exports, to pressure the court trying their father. Patriotism as a family business, export tariffs included.

Flávio negotiated roughly R$134M (≈US$24M) with Daniel Vorcaro, owner of Banco Master, to fund "Dark Horse," a biopic about his father. The Central Bank liquidated Master and Vorcaro was arrested trying to leave the country. Flávio confirms he asked for the money and denies wrongdoing.

Then the Rio militias. As a state deputy, Flávio gave Adriano da Nóbrega the Tiradentes Medal, Rio's highest honour, in 2005 while Nóbrega sat in jail on a homicide charge. Prosecutors later named Nóbrega head of the Escritório do Crime, a hired killing squad. Nóbrega's mother and wife both worked in Flávio's office, his wife for more than a decade. Some people send flowers.

The Amazon: the Bolsonaro years produced the highest deforestation rate since 2006, 13,038 km² in 2021. The rate has since fallen by more than half.

My personal take. In a more divided world, the far right shows little interest in the real issues: cost of living, security, health, climate. Its project is power, and keeping it. The playbook is familiar by now. Win an election, then capture the referee: courts, media, prosecutors, electoral rules. Call every check on power persecution. Call every critic an enemy of the nation. Do all of it in the name of liberty. Hungary ran that playbook for 16 years, and it took a record turnout and a two-thirds supermajority for Hungarians to start taking their institutions back. Hungary's fix came from the centre-right. This is a democracy question, not a left-right one. Brazil has a shortcut available. It can decline the first step.

Final first round: Flávio 47.05%, Lula 45.14%. Runoff October 25.
