I joined with community members from in and around Benton Harbor at Second Baptist Church this morning to honor the freedom, resiliency, and legacy of African American history. That’s what Juneteenth is all about.

Today I thought about my Grandma, who came to Michigan from Alabama where she didn’t have the right to vote, and in her lifetime, she saw many milestones of fight and progress—resulting in her seeing me be sworn in as the first Black Speaker of the Michigan House.

As we reflect on our history and look to our future, in my heart I believe ritual, reform, and rejoicing will guide us as we continue to make progress towards a more perfect union.
