One more time for the people at the back 🔈
WE NEED MORE HIGH QUALITY STUDIES WHICH SHOW SIGNIFICANT/MEANINGFUL DIFFERENCES IN EXERCISE PERFORMANCE ALIGNED WITH MENSTRUAL CYCLE PHASES BEFORE WE CAN PROVIDE EVIDENCE-BASED GUIDELINES TO FEMALE ATHLETES ON THIS TOPIC
One Broken Bone? You May Be at Risk for Another https://t.co/sLXvSpHADm A positive spin on preventing fractures by NYT with contributions from prominnet ASBMR members @ASBMR
Calorie deficit & gainz. New meta-analysis & regression suggests:
1. ~500 kcal/day = CAN'T gain new lean muscle, but CAN still get very strong!
2. >500 kcal/day deficit = probably can't preserve lean mass
Just guidelines, of course. Body mass matters.

Congrats to the amazing Coalition outreach team who put this together! While exciting, this is also pretty eye-opening… the amount of comments of young women who had no clue that losing a period is absolutely not normal is alarming.
BIG NEWS! We expanded our social reach- we’re on TikTok & went viral (>230K views)! We provide digestible info & educational resources aimed @ athletes to promote health & raise awareness about the Athlete Triad. Share our account w/ athletes in your life! https://t.co/RD4ay7V2Ro
Please retweet! I am recruiting PhD and MS students to join the Physical Activity and Lifetime Wellness Lab @UNCGKin in Fall 2022. Our lab uses ecological momentary assessment (#EMA) methods to better understand physical activity & sedentary behavior!
🎉 Announcement! We are excited to introduce the Female and Male Athlete Triad Coalition’s new president, Dr. Michelle Barrack @MBarrackRD Associate Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics at California State University Long Beach.

@TStellingwerff Definitely agree. Of course we can’t expect a perfect, clean-cut scenario for diagnosis but the complexities of the conditions provide an interesting (and fun) added challenge to finding answers/providing new insights. Interested to see where the research goes from here
My interpretation: in many cases OTS & RED-S/Triad may be acting synergistically to wreak havoc on the body? I only say this bc the etiology of RED-S/Triad is energy-related (not inadequate recovery due to training/other stressors). Interested to hear other people thoughts!
Are there overlaps between overtraining and #REDS? Is much of overtraining just a product of under fueling, and should actually be diagnosed as #REDS? 30 pages & 265 references later, proud to present this new @SportsMedicineJ review: https://t.co/qPGbQDlHB2
@nicstrock talks about her research regarding the Female Athlete Triad @theathletetriad which is the evidence-based cornerstone of the more recently introduced model of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S).

The REFUEL RCT isn’t the only study investigating increased EI/ improved energetic status on menstrual recovery. See last slide for references of these important studies
Does increasing caloric intake improve menstrual status? Current evidence indicates that a relatively small increase (~300-360 kcal/day) improves an athlete’s chance of getting her period back. Check out the slides below and recently published REFUEL RCT (De Souza et al. 2021)!
