Spent the last 2 days in Nashik. Another tier 2 city where we have seen stellar growth ( my definition of tier 2 cities are all cities with population between 5-30 lakhs)
Over the last few years, i have spent a good amount of time in tier 2 markets like Indore, Raipur, Nashik, Baroda, Rajkot, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Jalandhar, Kochi, Trivandrum, Guwahati etc
The aspiration in these cities are already similar to metro cities. Thanks to Meta, they are exposed to all the premium/new age products. But physical access is still an issue. Also the general trust issue ( product is good but what happens with after sales service) is lot more magnified. And digital discovery and offline fulfillment ( due to the trust deficit) is again lot higher than markets like mumbai/blore.
Many more such interesting observations and consumer insights. Tier 2 cities where wealth/buying power/aspiration already exists but access is still limited provides huge opportunities and i am sure we will start seeing many consumer brands focusing on this population
But the fundamentals of winning offline remain the same here. Ensure availability, visibility and trade advocacy. And track them as lead indicators. Numbers always follow. Have 100s of proof points now :)

It is not a tragedy that India lagged behind in the AI race. The real tragedy is that a large number of engineering graduates, diploma holders, ITI-trained technicians, and even professors outside Computer Science departments are still not equipped to solve basic engineering problems effectively.
Fixing that foundational gap should be the first priority.
I remember interning at a company & there was a major electricity shortage.
At the same time, several CNC machines still had to run to meet delivery deadlines. To manage the situation, the management decided to cut down the use of ACs.
CEO was the first to sit in the workshop without AC. Everyone followed him & for a week, nobody used AC.
That’s how leadership should be- leading by example.
So if PM Modi wants people to use metros instead of cars, then ministers should lead from the front. Let them use only metros & buses for next few months.

२००६ च्या आसपास डेव्हिड अटेनबरो यांची 'प्लॅनेट अर्थ' नावाची सिरीज आली होती. तो काळ डीव्हीडीजचा होता. तेंव्हापासून डेव्हिड अटेनबरो या माणसाच्या कामाने मला शब्दशः वेड लावलं होतं. 'प्लॅनेट अर्थ' पासून पुढे आलेल्या सीरिजच्या डीव्हीडीज आणि पुढच्या काळात ब्ल्युरेज, रिलीज झाल्या रे झाल्या की त्या मिळवून बघणे हा माझा छंदच झाला होता. पुढे २०१३ मध्ये त्यांची 'आफ्रिका' ही सिरीज आली. त्याचा सुरुवातीचा मोंटाज इतका सुंदर आणि व्हिज्युअल स्टोरीटेलिंगचा उत्कृष्ट नमुना होता, जो मी कितीवेळा पाहिला असेल याची मोजदादच नाही.

सर डेव्हिड अटेनबरो यांच्या आयुष्याकडे पाहिलं की कमाल वाटते की हा माणूस काय जगलाय आणि काय जगाला देऊन गेलाय ? कृष्णधवल (ब्लॅक अँड व्हाईट ) ते रंगीत ते हाय डेफिनिशन ते ३डी ते ४के या सगळ्या बदलांच्या काळात तो माणूस पडद्यावर होता, निसर्गाची कथा त्याच उत्कंठतेने सांगत होता, आणि हे करताना स्वतः पडदा न व्यापता, त्यांचं ज्या निसर्गावर अतिशय प्रेम होतं त्या निसर्गाला, त्यातील विस्मयकारक गोष्टींनाच त्यांनी केंद्रस्थानी ठेवलं.
अनेक माणसं १०० वर्ष जगतात पण अशी थोडी फार माणसं असतात ती या काळात सातत्याने कशाचा शोध घेत असतात आणि तो शोध हाच त्यांचा मित्र असतो.
गेल्या १०० वर्षांत अटेनबरोनी त्यांच्याशी निगडित काय पाहिलं नाही ? टीव्हीचा उदय पाहिला, दुसरं महायुद्ध पाहिलं, कृष्णधवल टीव्हीचा स्क्रीन रंगीत झालेला पाहिला, सॅटेलाईट क्रांती पाहिली, जेट युग पाहिलं, डिजिटल युग, इंटरनेट युग आणि निसर्गाचा एक घटक ते विकासाच्या नावाखाली निसर्गाचा नाश करणाऱ्या मानवाचा प्रवास पाहिला. एका अर्थाने मानवी उत्क्रांतीच्या टप्प्यातील सगळ्यात वेगवान शतकाला अनुभवलं आणि त्याचवेळेस या सगळ्या बदलांनी विचलित न होता निसर्गाची कथा ते भरभरून मांडत राहिले.
सुरुवातीला हा निसर्ग किती सुंदर आहे हे सांगणारे अटेनबरो पुढे आपण या निसर्गाचीच काय हानी करत आहोत हे उद्वेगाने मांडायला लागले. अवघ्या पाच सहा दशकांत झालेला ह्रास याचं मूर्तिमंत उदाहरण कुठे शोधायचं असेल तर डेव्हिड अटेनबरो यांच्या डॉक्युमेंट्रीजच्या प्रवासात सापडेल.

अटेनबरो यांच्याबद्दल मला अजून खूप दीर्घ लिहिता येईल. पण त्याऐवजी मी मराठी तरुण-तरुणींना विनंती करेन की कृपा करून त्यांच्या डॉक्युमेंट्रीज बघा. त्या स्टोरीटेलिंगसाठी बघाच पण निसर्ग किती सुंदर आहे आणि आपण तो अमुक रस्ता, तमुक ब्रिज यांच्या नावाखाली कसा उध्वस्त करत आहोत हे समजून घेण्यासाठी पण बघा.
आणि अजून एका कारणासाठी अटेनबरो माझ्या माध्यमातील सहकाऱ्यांनी बघा ते म्हणजे एखाद्या विषयातील अभ्यास जर पक्का असेल तर तुम्हाला माझा कन्टेन्ट कोणी बघेल का? मला तो व्हायरल करायला काय करावं लागेल याची चिंता करावी लागत नाही यासाठी नक्की बघा.
अटेनबरो ज्या काळात जन्माला आले तेंव्हा पृथीबद्दलच, निसर्गाबद्दलच कुतूहल जागृत असण्याचा काळ होता, ते आज अवघ्या १०० वर्षांचे आहेत जेंव्हा हे कुतूहल जाऊन पृथ्वी, निसर्ग पार उध्वस्त करण्यापर्यंतचा काळ त्यांना बघावा लागत आहे. त्यांना इतकं दीर्घायुष्य लाभू दे की ही पृथ्वी हा निसर्ग पुन्हा रसरसलेला त्यांना बघायला मिळेल.

An MIT professor taught the same math course for 62 years, and the day he retired, students from every country on earth showed up online to watch him give his final lecture.
I opened the playlist at 2am and ended up watching three of them back to back.
His name is Gilbert Strang. The course is MIT 18.06 Linear Algebra.
Every machine learning engineer, every data scientist, every quant, every self-taught programmer who actually understands how AI works learned the math from this one man. Most of them never set foot on MIT's campus. They just opened a free playlist on YouTube and let him teach.
Here's the story almost nobody tells you.
Strang joined the MIT math faculty in 1962. He retired in 2023. That is 61 years of standing at the same chalkboard teaching the same subject to 18-year-olds.
The interesting part is what he did when MIT launched OpenCourseWare in 2002. Most professors were skeptical. They worried that putting their lectures online would make their classrooms irrelevant. Strang did not hesitate. He said his life's mission was to open mathematics to students everywhere. He filmed every lecture and gave it away.
The decision quietly changed how the world learns math.
For decades linear algebra was taught the wrong way. Professors started with abstract vector spaces and proofs about field axioms. Students drowned in the abstraction. Most never recovered. They walked out believing they were bad at math when they had simply been taught in an order that nobody's brain is built to absorb.
Strang inverted the entire curriculum.
He started with matrix multiplication. Something you can write down on paper. Something you can compute by hand. Something you can see. Then he showed his students that everything else in linear algebra eigenvectors, singular value decomposition, orthogonality, the four fundamental subspaces was just a different lens for understanding what the matrix was actually doing under the hood.
His rule was strict. If a student could not explain a concept using a concrete 3 by 3 example, that student did not actually understand the concept yet. The abstraction was supposed to come last, not first. The intuition was the foundation. The proofs were just confirmation that the intuition was correct.
The second thing Strang changed was the classroom itself. He said please and thank you to his students. Every single lecture. He paused mid-derivation to ask "am I OK?" to check if anyone was lost. He never used the word "obviously" or "trivially" because he knew exactly what those words do to a student who is one step behind. He treated 19-year-olds learning math for the first time the way he treated his own colleagues. With patience. With respect. With the assumption that they belonged in the room.
For 62 years.
The result is something that has never happened in the history of education. A single math professor became the default teacher of his subject for the entire planet.
Universities in India, China, Brazil, Nigeria, every country with a computer science department, started telling their own students to just watch Strang's lectures. The University of Illinois revised its linear algebra course to do almost no in-person lecturing. The reason was honest. The professor said they could not compete with the videos.
His final lecture was in May 2023.
The auditorium was packed with students who had never met him before. He walked to the chalkboard, taught for an hour, and at the end the entire room stood and applauded. He looked confused for a moment, like he genuinely did not understand why they were cheering. Then he smiled and waved them off and walked out.
His written comment under the YouTube video of that final lecture was four sentences long. He said teaching had been a wonderful life. He said he was grateful to everyone who saw the importance of linear algebra. He said the movement of teaching it well would continue because it was right.
That was it. No book promotion. No farewell speech. No legacy management.
The man whose teaching is the foundation of modern AI just thanked the audience and went home.

When Albert Einstein moved to Princeton, his wild hair and simple clothes often made him look like an absent-minded worker rather than a world-famous scientist.
One day, he was even mistaken for an electrician. Someone asked him to fix a faulty light bulb socket.
With a playful smile, Einstein quietly repaired it and said nothing about who he really was.
Only after the job was done did he reveal his identity—leaving the staff red-faced and speechless.
But this was not the first time he enjoyed a good role reversal.
In the early days, when his theory of relativity had just begun to make headlines—especially after the 1919 solar eclipse proved him right—Einstein was invited to speak across the world. Yet few people knew what he looked like.
On one trip in the United States, he admitted to his driver that he was tired of repeating the same lecture again and again.
The driver, who looked a bit like him, joked, “I’ve heard your talk so many times, I could give it myself.”
Einstein laughed—and then agreed.
At the next conference, the driver went on stage as “Professor Einstein,” while the real Einstein sat quietly in the back.
The driver delivered the lecture perfectly. No one suspected a thing.
Then a proud professor in the audience stood up and asked a very difficult question.
Einstein prepared to step in and confess the trick. But before he could rise, the driver calmly replied, “Sir, your question is so simple that even my driver, sitting at the back, can answer it.”
All eyes turned. Einstein stood up, gave the correct answer, and saved the day. Later, the two men shared a hearty laugh.
Whether this story is true or just a charming legend—sometimes told about another great scientist, Max Planck—it carries a clever lesson.
Anyone can memorize a speech and repeat it smoothly. With practice, almost anyone can give a lecture that sounds impressive.
But that does not mean they truly understand the subject.
Psychologists call this “chauffeur knowledge.” It is the kind of knowledge that knows the words, but not the meaning.
It shines on the outside—but inside, it may be empty.
Einstein, of course, had the real thing.
For thousands of years, babies slept with their mothers. When they cried, they were attended to. Then two men came along: Dr. Holt and John B. Watson. They said babies should be trained. That babies had to fit the assembly line schedules of their parents. "Newborns must cry to expand their lungs," they claimed. "Simply let them cry it out." And that's how the "cry it out" sleep training method was born. Watson treated babies like experiments. "Never hug or kiss your child," he wrote. "Shake hands with them in the morning." After all, mothers needed rest, to attend to their husbands and households. Watson had four children. Three attempted suicide. One succeeded. And we still follow it today. Because once you convince a mother to ignore her baby's cries, you've broken something primal.

Pretty cool- India is setting up dedicated spectrum and mandating that new cars use it for car to car communications. Cars will broadcast safety messages (hard braking, speed, direction, hazards), so nearby cars can “see through walls” and around trucks, curves, and intersections, even before sensors do. Should result in fewer crashes, smoother traffic, and a stronger base for autonomy. Cameras and lidar are great but it’s useful to see what the car a few ahead of you is doing.
They’ve been trying to do this in the US for a decade but a standards fight got in the way.

Nobody follows it if you see the quality of roads but that’s another story. The point is work is worship got lost in the socialist/Lala exploiting debate so even the most hardcore religious ones don’t value hard work anymore.
Respect for people who actually work using their hands - craftsmen, builders, engineers with tools - should be primary. Everything else follows.
Spiritual is alright but hard work is a necessary ingredient for a functioning society.
What Hinduism needs is more doers. More builders. Not more thinkers and if you do that that’s alright - just value doing hard work as equal.
