It was to be expected that we would receive extremely unpleasant news from the United States on a daily basis, but today another chapter has been opened. A completely unpredictable US president who turns the Ukrainian victims of brutal Russian violence into perpetrators no longer speaks for the liberal, values-led Western world.

While Russia continues its criminal aggression, we are witnessing a perpetrator-victim reversal in the White House: not a word about Russia's trampling on human rights. Not a word about the atrocities that take place in Ukraine on a daily basis. Instead, @ZelenskyyUa is paraded in front of the world press. A scandal.

Europe can and must no longer tolerate this - nor the affront to our high representative Kaja Kallas, who travelled to the United States to meet with the American Secretary of State. No sooner had she landed there than the meeting was cancelled.

Ukraine needs our support without pause - military, humanitarian, economic and strategic. We have the means to supply Ukraine with the weapons it needs and we have the economic instruments to help in the long term.

Once a treaty/agreement between Ukraine and the EU has been concluded, the European Investment Bank could issue bonds for the "mining of rare earths", which could be subscribed to by European countries, companies and also private individuals. This would generate billions of euros that would go directly to Ukraine for reconstruction.

Europe must become less dependent on the USA and launch its own initiatives - and do so immediately.

As a transatlanticist, I do not say this lightly, but it is time to get going. It's not about sucking up, but making clear announcements that must be followed by action. Long live Europe.
