@websterkaroon This will be devastating for Iranians and a mild temporary annoyance for Americans. But that's always been the effect of Iran's policy to USA. For decades the regime calculated it was worth having a hard life just to fight the USA and do minimal damage, so no reason they'll stop.
@websterkaroon Yep, this will bleed Iran to death.
Iran might as well capitulate on some level and admit they lack the power to take on the world superpower. They'll probably keep "resisting" though, and Iran will eventually become 5th world country.
@cornu__copia Are they a contributor to low Greek fertility rates through the 20th century though?
I actually like these homes and streets, but the living space looks very cramped including streets.
@JAMvsJAM@Brain1066 If black immigrants were instead settled en masse in Bradford and Slough (as Asians were), they wouldn't have made these places desirable or cool either. So it wasn't blacks that made Camberwell or Notting Hill what they are today either.
I'm actually really surprised at how racialised this debate about gentrification is. All the tweets condemning this are from black people and I don't think I knew there was such racial polarisation on this issue.
I recommend Camberwell as a place to move to in London, especially if you're planning on having kids. It's gentrifying nicely but it's still pretty cheap. It's pretty well connected transport-wise and it has some excellent shops, restaurants, pubs and parks - two of the best pubs in London, in fact, and one of the best parks. I see loads of young families around, and I gather the primary schools are good.
@JAMvsJAM@Brain1066 Places like Notting Hill were designed to be desirable and rich. You can tell just by the architecture. Just bc there was decline and black immigrants were settled there doesnt mean it belongs to them
These areas are so centrally located that they're inherently desirable.
@Darius1296 Yeah they follow American identity politics, but I think there's also a genuine ignorance about the historic demographics of London. Like they don't know blacks once replaced the white working class in these areas, so now think whole neighbourhoods belong to them forever.
@Boxy_FT Also the ones from countries that treated them well (Morocco) are v right wing, while those from countries that thratened and expelled them (Iraq) are more left leaning. Iraqis are more educated than Moroccans in Israel.
@levantophile People often say Tehran resembles Athens or some South American city LOL.
I think people are really overstating similarities between Lebanese Shia and Iran.
@king_cyrus12 He's still young and will play for Iran again in 4 years
That is provided this whole team of 35 year olds isn't totally replaced by 20 year olds (who are currently 16).
@xoxoshirazi Oh no, Iran was a developing country just like every other country in Asia. How terrible! How awful that a government would try to develop a poor country that only recently endured mass famines!
@websterkaroon But "decreased" is also too soft a word. I'm not sure if many teens and young adults in north Tehran are even practicing Muslims now.
My female cousins all did their 3 prayers a day 15-20 years ago, and today none of them practice Islam at all. One even hates Islam. Big contrast
