This thread is my commitment device for reading a paper a day (inspired by @BeAScientist).
I mean, I'll keep a backlog so I can take some days off (you know how it be), so it'll be more like a paper a day /on average/.
@partha_mitra@lpachter There is a plausible relationship, and metaphors are useful to develop a better understanding of complex systems. We can agree though that metaphors can also restrict understanding if taken too far.
A new type of microbe discovered in the human gut! Called obelisks, they can create their own proteins that are entirely new to science. The team named their proteins โoblins.โ Scientists scratching their heads about it

@APredeus@jrossibarra Good point! For "deployed" analyses I use Singularity. Docker is good to have when writing new containers since they build by layers. Singularity, even when based off Dockerfiles, always builds from scratch, which can take a while when iterating development of new containers.
@APredeus@jrossibarra I always thought the root user can set-up the Docker daemon and stuff, add a non-root to the docker user group, and thereafter the non-root user can use Docker. But I could be wrong here.
@jrossibarra Good! If I can build my own containers I can install most of the stuff I wanna use without bugging the HPC admin to add new modules. It's easier than compiling from scratch since I don't have to chase lib dependencies.
@GLoncharnock@engineers_feed Hi Gabriella, what an idea. Besides krypton, neon is also a noble gas. Why do you think these two noble gases are not classed under Gabylon's mountain or volcano triangle? I do not know much about the origin of these elements, but as you say, they also come from volcanoes, no?
@yamagu09 It is offline for me as well. In particular, https://t.co/PMTtDZoXTG, which seems to host at least some Bioconductor packages, is timing out (HTTP 443).
only reason i caught this was by hardcoding expected checksums of key outputs in my workflows like some insance doomsday prepper (or so i thought?? maybe should be standard practice working with R???)
