@DeanMacpherson Why are you quoting a right-wing think tank that has shown it’s disdain for science by funding the Great Barrington Declaration folk.
Dean- the way the DA is going about this is utterly irresponsible. Why aren’t you listening to the PROPER authorities?
@thefishguySA@BarbaraCreecy_ Paper is patient, good plan but we will not count our penguins before they have hatched. Will the fishing industry ever agree to give us penguins some space during breeding & moulting season? Will the now elusive sardines recover & return? So many questions, so little time.
#AfricanPenguin - Give this lady a Sardine, that is if you can find any(In human speak this would translate as: Give that woman a Bells) #overfishing. Once we were most abundant #seabird of Benguela upwelling ecosystem, sadly we are now few & far between.
Say it like it is: #overfishing Fishing with nets #ClimateChange, stealing of their eggs, guano harvesting. All of this lead to the extinction of the African Penguin.
Hey @SANParksAENP the African penguins hanging out in the blue parts, welcomes Cathy Dreyer. We think, as one of the most endangered marine sentinels, we deserved at least a mention in this release. Perceptions matter. Sharks & whales travel past, we call this place home.
Dear @StephenGrootes African penguins would like you to please ask @BarbaraCreecy_ where we can procure sardines for friends in hospital, we aren’t only struggling to feed the sick, there is hardly any fish left for us in the wild. Fish are few & far between. We are starving,
Hurry up with the implementation of that 2nd plan, us penguins don’t know if we can hang around long enough to survive plan B. Only 13 500 breeding pairs left. We will also support a plan for sardines, we definitely need more of them. Just saying. @thefishguySA @RobbenPenguins
@BarbaraCreecy_ invites members of the public to comment on the draft biodiversity management plan for the African penguin within 30 days of publication of notice in Government Gazette. More information » https://t.co/6qAmqCaZLu
Dear @BarbaraCreecy_ any truth in the rumor that octopus traps have moved to Overstrand area? Maybe somebody thought entanglements will be less visual than in False Bay? Heads up: Whales love the area. Asking for a whale @AlettaHarrison@HermanusTimes@OceaniMPActSA
Dear min @BarbaraCreecy_ & @environmentza if the Marine Pollution (Control and Civil Liability) Act (previously Prevention and Combating of Pollution of the Sea by Oil Act) 6 of 1981 states that bunkering is illegal, why is it allowed? https://t.co/f4XhijGS5L
Come on PE, its is not just about us penguins. Oil spills affect our fish https://t.co/hUvP4X5G9o don't grow, their livers are enlarged oil changes heart & respiration rates, causes fin erosion & reproduction impairment. Oil adversely affects eggs and larval survival.Time to ACT.
We, the penguins were the very visual example of the devastating effects of an oil spill. No amount of money can buy back biodiversity. We need the people to speak. Please attend the meeting.
When: 1 August, 18:30
Where: Dolphin's Leap
#BeTheChange@AlgoaFM@HeraldPE
Prevention is better than cure. Bunkering should NEVER have been allowed next to penguin colony. Infograph from @apssZA explains why #EveryPenguinCounts Remove one adult of a breeding pair, even for a single breeding season and the next generation of breeders could drop to zero.
Maybe we should invite @LewisPugh to swim through Algoa Bay. At the moment it may be a bit of an oily swim, but we can always organize a wash afterwards if it will mean some better protection for this amazing bay of biodiversity. @OscarMabuyane
It’s been 1 year since I swam the length of the English Channel to protest against the under-protection of UK waters. The turnaround has been remarkable. It’s fair to say that the UK now leads the world in ocean protection. 🐟🦀🐬👇https://t.co/oR1zyqJ49n
Please place the serious threat of our (#AfricanPenguin ) extinction & massive loss of biodiversity due to oil spills caused by ship-to-ship bunkering in Algoa Bay on agenda? Oil spills affects entire ecosystem, oiled #Penguins are unfortunately a very visual reminder of impact
Newly appointed Min of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Ms @BarbaraCreecy_ hosting the first sixth administration MinMec (Min and MECs) on envitonment. The meeting discusses and agrees on Programmes for the environment sector in alignment with priorities of government.
@Katta_Ludynia@SANCCOB@BarbaraCreecy_ So if my #Penguin maths are correct & “only” 100L oiled 120 penguins, then “only” 200L = 220 penguins. @rbsherley what will the effect on our population numbers be?
Dr L. Pichegru - "Bunkering ops started a few years ago in Algoa Bay without any input from environmentalists or scientists. 2 oil spills already occurred.
1st in 2016 "only" involved 100L of oil- 120 penguins affected. Now 200 to 400 L were spilled.” @rbsherley @Katta_Ludynia
@Gary22k@SANCCOB@BarbaraCreecy_ Sad to say the numbers are increasing. This oil spill may be the final chapter of our story. What can you do to help? Citizens of the EC rise up. Prevention is better than cure. Ship-to-ship bunkering may be profitable for the chosen few but no money will buy biodiversity back
