Pumpkins:
Halloween is one night.
Tonight.
If you have to waste a food item (and I strongly suggest you don't), please put it out for one night, then safely dispose of it.
Please DO NOT put it out for the wildlife.
Once you've handled it, cut it, left it out in the open, unrefrigerated, it will not be hygienic or safe for anyone to eat.
Pumpkins are a low-acid vegetable, so once they are cut and left at room temperature, pathogens will rapidly grow on the flesh, producing mould spores.
Our precious wildlife do not have any magical properties that protect them against food poisoning.
Additionally, this time of year there are baby hedgehogs around, born too late to find natural food, desperate to eat anything to stop the pain of starvation.
Pumpkin has a laxative affect so it would be particularly cruel to leave it out for starving wildlife to eat in desperation, causing them to lose precious fluids that may make the difference between life and death.
So no matter what you read elsewhere, please DO NOT put your discarded decoration out for the birds or any other wildlife.
Please DO NOT compost them either, as a composting pumpkin can produce highly toxic tremorgenic mycotoxins, which will be deadly if the compost bin is not properly secured and is accessible to wildlife (or pets).
Many hedgehogs, seeking the warmth of a compost bin, die this way every year.
Once you've used the pumpkin as decoration it's waste, fit only for the bin.
Please help get this vital message spread far and wide, to save precious lives and prevent suffering.
Everyone should know that this animal exists. It's a Viscacha.
The Viscacha is known for always looking sad, disappointed, and needing a nap. They are my new spirit animal.

End the Carers Allowance cliff-edge! Many reporting the scandal that those caring 35+hrs/wk oft for vulnerable loved ones must repay £1,000s just for slipping a quid or two over the max earnings threshold (currently £151/wk).
Ending that clawback's important. Yet the cliff-edge should end too. Almost all other benefits work by taper - ie earn over the limit and the benefit doesn't immediately stop, it gradually reduces. With carers allowance, a penny over and you get nowt. This is simply stupid and should be stopped.
Carers are a backbone of the UK, saving the state & NHS billions. The £82/wk allowance is pitifully low, at the very least we should end the cliff-hanger so work pays.
Dog Poisoned by the Diffuser
Saturday night I got home late and my dog didn't recognize me. Being a nanny I thought I woke him up and he was having a night terror. Sunday, he was still acting weird. I realized that I had been running my new diffuser and decided to turn it off. Sunday afternoon, he was feeling better.
Today at work, my dog sitter said that he wouldn't come out from under the bed. It was very odd as he is a happy dog.
I came from work early and again, he was very confused about who I was.
So I took him to emergency vet.
It turns out that the tea tree oil I was using in the diffuser is toxic for dogs. Thankfully the test showed that his liver was ok but we weren't out of the woods yet. He was given fluids under his skin to get the toxins out.
The vet and the poison control are saying that they see these cases often now that the popularity of essential oil is growing.
Please make sure that the essential oils you are burning are not toxic for your pets.
Here is a list of essential oils not to use if you have a dog at home

The proposed rate increases for touring visas are astronomical and unacceptable. This would create a financial barrier for musicians that means only those who have MINIMUM $1650 (with expedited visas up to $2500) can even come to the US on tour. The state of touring is in crisis!
A dog attack on our Hebridean sheep at Pegsdon Hills, Beds has left one sheep dead with others injured and traumatised.
We need to stress how vitally important it is to keep dogs on leads anywhere near livestock, especially as lambing season approaches

Please don't turn your lawn into plastic. Plastic grass reduces food & shelter for wildlife such as bees & butterflies; has a high carbon footprint; sheds micro-plastics which wash into our rivers and seas. Create a wildlife-friendly space instead. More https://t.co/Ha52cZW8bc 🐝
Thinking of booking a boat for a short break in a city? Just because it's advertised on a travel website doesn't necessarily mean it's correctly licensed. You could be putting yourself in danger. On our waters, boats to rent must have a long-term mooring https://t.co/KleTqIiNBS
