The U.S., through Pakistan, is publicly blackmailing Iran to come for negotiations if it wants to extend the ceasefire that is set to expire on April 22.

Pakistan’s role should have been bridging the U.S. and Iran from their maximalist positions to a middle ground to extract a deal, not watching as a mere spectator as the U.S. continues to impose a naval blockade on Iran and hijack its vessels. Instead of reaching out to the U.S. to stop this madness to ensure negotiations take place, Pakistan is delivering U.S. threats to Iran, disguised as a mediator.

The most f*cked up aspect of this is the "DoorDash grandma" t-shirt she's wearing, and the implications of this: I checked and this is a pre-organized PR stunt between DoorDash and the White House (they boast about it on their website: https://t.co/AHDUwKQfgj).

The lady - Sharon Simmons, "a grandmother of ten" who has "completed more than 14,000 deliveries" - isn't even from DC, they brought her over from Arkansas as a prop for this.

Think about just how uniquely rotten things need to be in order for this to happen.

She is literally a grandmother relying on gig work because she can't afford healthcare for her husband's stage-3 cancer. She doesn't even get paid a living wage and needs to rely on tips. And as an "independent contractor," she gets no benefits, no healthcare, no retirement.

Which means she is an almost perfect illustration of the failure of the American social contract on almost every level: healthcare, labor rights, retirement, wages, etc. Any decent human being looking at her story - let alone policymakers - should feel only one thing: shame.

Yet DoorDash and the White House looked at this woman and saw a photo op. They flew her from Arkansas, branded her "DoorDash grandma" and used her as a mascot for a tax tweak - no tax on tips - that wouldn't even begin to cover her husband's chemo sessions.

Watching the actual video of her "delivery" to Trump (https://t.co/xzNDJq71Jx) is almost unreal. Trump opens up by saying, smiling at the camera, "who says it looks staged? It doesn't." They immediately proceed to do a joint press conference to a bunch of journalists who were conveniently standing right there.

None of the questions that follow during the next 15 minutes are related to Simmons' situation who just stands there. Journalists, the President, and cameras all obsessing over culture wars and the actual war in Iran, while the walking embodiment of the country's deepest structural failures - healthcare, labor, retirement - stands silently in a corporate t-shirt, unmentioned and too uncomfortable to confront.

This video is both heartbreaking and life-inspiring.

A film crew tries to film the destruction caused by US/Israeli bombing at an apartment complex in Iran. One of the tenants, an old man whose apartment has been almost completely shattered, insists on inviting the film crew in and offering them something to eat.

"We have only come to film, we don't want anything," the crew says.

But the old man insists on at least offering them oranges and apples.

Ultimately, those who come out victorious from conflicts are those who retain their dignity. Who never let war make them lose their humanity and self-respect.

Who, even in the worst of situations, insist on upholding sacred traditions and beliefs, including that of hospitality.

That's what makes a civilization indestructible.

Look, I don’t like the regime. My entire extended family is Baha’i. I lived in Iran as an adult and saw the rot and repression first hand.

But as a journalist, I also covered Iraq and saw what Americans did to the place. I was in Lebanon when the Israelis were shelling apartment blocks. I witnessed Libya being torn apart after a violent upheaval without any plan. I saw firsthand what happened to Syria when it became a playground for regional and world powers.

These countries won’t recover for 30 years.

You now have a senile gameshow host and an indicted war criminal launching a war against Iran. They killed a school full of children on day one and sent a toxic cloud over Tehran on week one. They are hitting Unesco sites and apartment buildings filled with bewildered civilians and destroying the country’s economy.

They have no plan, or strategy, or internatonal support. Even Americans don’t support the war. Trump and Bibi are gonna smash up a lot of stuff and leave the place a mess, with Khamenei still in charge. Then China will move in and buy up the country cheap, and maybe Russia will get a Persian Gulf base.

None of this will lead to democracy. Trump and Bibi don’t even believe in democracy for their own countries. But it also won’t lead to constitutional monarchy or anything decent or normal.

It will only lead to ruin, blackouts, water outages, poverty, hunger, lawlessness, and despair.

Pete Hegseth said this was "the first sinking of an enemy ship by a torpedo since WWII" (which is false, but that's beside the point), so I decided to look at what happened in WW2 and... this might surprise no-one: turns out the Nazis were more humane than the Americans.

Probably the most abject part here is that the warship had many survivors - 32 to be precise (https://t.co/bS1uARrBtf) - and the U.S. made zero effort to rescue them, despite it being required by the laws of naval warfare and simply being the honorable thing to do.

It took little Sri-Lanka, with its very modest means - especially compared to the $1 trillion US defense budget - to do the honorable thing and launch a (successful) rescue operation.

Even the literal Nazis, during WW2, rescued the survivors of ships their U-boats sank. It was considered a matter of basic honor.

The history of this is actually interesting: the Nazis rescued survivors all the way until the so-called Laconia Incident in 1942 (https://t.co/6wI251aNCv).

The Laconia was a British troopship sunk by U-156, a German U-boat, off the West African coast. Right after the sinking, the Nazis immediately began rescuing over 400 survivors, broadcasting - as was common practice - in plain English their position on open radio channels to all Allied powers nearby, so they wouldn't get attacked during the rescue.

That's when a US B-24 "Liberator" bomber attacked the submarine anyway, even though all the rescued survivors were on its foredeck. The B-24 killed dozens of Laconia's survivors with bombs and strafing attacks, forcing U-156 to cast into the sea the remaining survivors that she had rescued and crash dive to avoid being destroyed.

The American B-24 pilots mistakenly reported they had sunk U-156, and were awarded medals for bravery...

This event completely changed Nazi policy on this matter: Karl Dönitz, commander of the U-boat fleet, issued the "Laconiarefehl" - the Laconia Order - forbidding U-boats from rescuing survivors, because the risk to the submarine was now too high.

In other words, the Americans during WW2 essentially forced the Nazis to abandon survivors - from the allied side (!) - at sea.

Dönitz at least had an excuse.
