Returning home after a wildfire is one of the hardest moments a survivor can face. For Jim, it meant saying goodbye to a home he spent 25 years building.

When Jim returned for the first time after the Aspen Acres Fire in Colorado, he and his daughter, Julia, walked through the remains together, reflecting on all they had lost. Among the debris, Julia found several decorative pots that had survived the fire and carried them back to her father.

In that difficult moment, @COWYRedCross Disaster Mental Health volunteer Mike Baker was there to listen, support, and help the family begin processing what came next.

For Jim, returning home brought painful confirmation of what the fire had taken. But he didn't have to face that moment alone.

In the days, weeks and months after a disaster, recovery is about more than rebuilding homes. As families navigate grief, loss and uncertainty, disaster mental health volunteers are there to help them face the road ahead. ❤️

Vera Wang, a senior at Kaiser High School in Hawaiʻi, conducted research showing that fungi naturally found on coconut husks can biodegrade certain plastics and sunscreen compounds.

Her project, Bioprospecting of Novel Sunscreen- and Plastic-Degrading Fungi in Tannin-Rich Coconut Fiber, earned multiple awards at the 2026 Hawaiʻi State Science and Engineering Fair, including first place in the Microbiology category and third place overall (Best in Fair), plus special awards.

This built on her earlier work (as a sophomore) creating a coconut-husk-based ocean filter inspired by traditional Polynesian weaving to capture microplastics and sunscreen from surface water. She then investigated the fungal communities living in the husks and found they could break down those pollutants; tannins in the fibers may help support these fungi, and some of the species appear previously uncharacterized.
