OpenMetadata

The open context platform for AI. Open source metadata, meaning & memory for data teams, AI assistants & agents. Join us:

[OpenMetadata @open_metadata]

@open_metadata 2.0 is here: the Open Context Layer for AI agents.

An agent is only as reliable as the context it's built on. OpenMetadata 2.0 gives people and agents the three primitives needed for working with enterprise data: Context (what data exists), Ontology (what it means), and Memory (learnings that persist).

Select release highlights in OpenMetadata 2.0:

- Context Center with Memory - One home for articles, documents, memories, and integrated knowledge from Confluence and Google Drive
- Persona-Based Context Curation - Curate what each persona receives for better results and reduced token consumption
- Context API/MCP Tooling - Quickly retrieve the related context for a data asset or a persona in a single call for better performance
- Data Marketplace - Drive trusted data discovery and self-service with business Domains and Data Products
- Enhanced Knowledge Graph - Technical metadata connected to business definitions, ownership, policies, lineage, and quality in one navigable graph

Open source and built on open standards: DCAT, OWL, RDF, SKOS, PROV-O, and more.

@CollateData's managed OpenMetadata 2.0 service is also now available, and includes additional enterprise and AI capabilities, including: AI Analytics, Shared Chats, AI Studio, AI Automations, Reverse Metadata, Admin Analytics, and AI Governance Studio.

Thank you to everyone who joined the October OpenMetadata Community Meetup, with a special thanks to all our speakers:

Four sessions: one production story, two agent experiments, and a first look at OpenMetadata 2.1.

- Community spotlight: Ari from seQura shared how her team runs OpenMetadata and the lessons they picked up along the way.
- RDF, Knowledge Graph, and SPARQL: Felipe showed agents answering multi-hop questions over the metadata graph, with higher accuracy and fewer hallucinations.
- Memory agents: Pere walked through agents that learn from conversations, workflows, and corrections, so they make better decisions over time.
- OpenMetadata 2.1: Harsha demoed Ontology Studio, Hierarchical Metrics, lineage and Knowledge Graph improvements, and the new UI.

At @BigData_LDN, Suresh Srinivas (@suresh_m_s) made the case: "If context is your moat, it should be open source."

AI agents need one consistent understanding of your data, not a proprietary layer locked to a single vendor.

Same principle as an open agent harness: decouple the model from what has to persist. Do it for context too.

RDF, OWL, and SKOS have been around for 20+ years. Hand-built ontologies rarely survived production.

OpenMetadata co-founder @suresh_m_s says in @InfoWorld: Let models draft the ontology from your metadata, then have humans review it.

@Sequra_app connected OpenMetadata + their BI tool via MCP. Self-service analysis adoption: 22% to 53%.

Next problem: trusting the answer. Ariadna Cuffi (SeQura) shares how at our Oct 21 meetup.

Can you export your ontology in OWL or RDF, load it elsewhere, and have it still mean the same thing?

If the answer involves a support ticket, it isn't open.

Test a context layer before you build on it:

1. Does it make commitments?
2. Can you inspect the logic?
3. Does inference trace to a rule?
4. Is it OWL/RDF/SKOS, or locked in?

[OpenMetadata @open_metadata]

An independent ontology consultant analyzed our context platform's JSON Schema model and W3C standards implementation: RDF, OWL, SKOS, SHACL.

Her framework tests for three things most "context layer" claims skip: a controlled vocabulary glossary, a typed-relationship ontology with logical axioms, and a queryable knowledge graph you can actually run inference against.

@JessicaTalisman's take: most vendor "ontologies" are a glossary with a hierarchy. Ours passed the harder test: typed relationships, logical axioms, and inference you can trace.

How do you roll out a data catalog inside a complex, Databricks-centered enterprise environment?

@progrockrec sat down with Noman Tahir from PwC to talk through exactly that in this new Ask the Experts episode.

Column-level lineage came up as one of the most important pieces. Still, the conversation kept circling back to what really makes or breaks an enterprise deployment: data contracts, data quality, and governance working together. AI is part of the conversation, of course. How else will you get reliable answers unless you have high-quality, properly governed data, with context?

That's just part of what OpenMetadata makes simple.
