Thank you for your positive response to yesterday’s announcement of the National Cleaning Days Initiative. We’ve taken note of your questions and concerns, such as:

~Where shall we meet to carry out cleaning activities?
~What will happen if I don’t participate or if my neighbours don’t participate in the cleaning activities?
~ Will Cleaning Days be public holidays? 😊
~What if the last Saturday of a particular month is my birthday? 😊
~But Saturday is Sabbath. Can we clean either on Friday or Sunday?
~Who’s going to provide cleaning equipment?
~What’s the sustainability plan?
~What happens after the launch?

Rt. Hon. Prime Minister @R_Nabbanja and Honourable Ministers will respond to all these concerns and more at a press conference later this morning.

Starting this Saturday, Ugandans across the country will come together to participate in community cleaning activities.

The National Cleaning Days Initiative will be observed on the last Saturday of every month, and all Ugandans are encouraged to take part. This will help us keep our communities clean, healthy and safe.

Today, I had the honor of presiding over a historic milestone for our nation. At the Imperial Resort Beach Hotel in Entebbe, with our Permanent Secretary, @AlexKakooza_, I launched two game-changing initiatives that will redefine disaster preparedness in Uganda:

• ​The Uganda Anticipatory Action Roadmap (2025–2031)
• ​The Uganda Multi-Hazard Integrated Early Warning System (U-MHIEWS).

​For too long, our approach to natural disasters has been reactive; responding to crises only after they have already caused devastation. Today, we change the narrative.

​Predict, Prepare, and Protect
​With these two initiatives, @GovUganda is shifting Uganda’s national strategy toward forecast-based, proactive action:

• ​U-MHIEWS is our new national, automated, open-source early warning system. It leverages data to help us predict environmental hazards before they strike, giving us the vital window needed to prepare.

• ​The Anticipatory Action Roadmap embeds this predictive approach directly into our national policy framework.

This ensures that resources and funding are deployed early, saving lives and protecting the livelihoods of our most vulnerable citizens before a disaster can disrupt them.

A Shared Investment in Uganda’s Public Health
The long MakSPH and U.S. Government partnership in training, evidence and health systems

As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of its independence, @Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) reflects on more than 35 years of partnership with the people and Government of the United States. From the launch of the Master of Public Health programme in 1994 to fellowships, HIV research, surveillance, digital health systems, regional networks and public health innovation, the collaboration has helped shape Uganda’s public health workforce, evidence base and response capacity.

The feature traces how this shared investment has strengthened training, informed HIV policy and practice, supported national surveys such as UPHIA and CRANE, advanced One Health and resilience work, and built systems such as @metsprogrammeug that now support national stewardship by the @MinofHealthUG. MakSPH congratulates the people and Government of the United States on this milestone and appreciates their long-standing support to public health education, research and health systems strengthening in Uganda and beyond.

Disease Control and Environmental Health Department Reviews Performance, Sharpens Future Priorities

Today, we concluded a three-day retreat for the Department of Disease Control and Environmental Health, @Makerere University School of Public Health, in Jinja. Faculty and staff reviewed performance, consolidated priorities, and aligned teaching, research and community engagement with Uganda’s evolving public health needs.

Established in 2001 as one of MakSPH’s founding departments, the Department is a key platform for disease prevention and control, environmental health and health systems strengthening. Its portfolio includes the Bachelor of Environmental Health Science; Master of Environmental and Occupational Health; PhD training by coursework and research; and short courses in WASH and Occupational Safety and Health.

Closing the retreat, Assoc. Prof. @DavidMusoke14, who succeeded Dr. Esther Buregyeya as Chair in May 2026, urged staff to turn the discussions into better departmental practice in teaching, research and community service. He acknowledged Dr. Buregyeya’s eight years of leadership and committed to working with staff to move the Department forward.

Dear @MinofHealthUG, I wish to bring to your attention serious concerns regarding the current state of service delivery at Bundibugyo District Hospital.

There appears to be an increasing dependence on the electronic system to the extent that patient care is delayed whenever the network is unavailable.
We also know that @UEDCLTD perfectly distributes darkness everywhere.

In many cases, treatment cannot proceed until prescriptions and patient information are entered into the electronic system.
This raises a critical concern of; what really happens to patients requiring urgent medical attention when the network is down for extended periods.
The system is prioritized over LIFE!

Additionally, there are concerns regarding staff attendance and supervision.
The new Minister @CHRISBARYOMUNS1 is aware that the staff here buzz during working hours!
Some health workers arrive late, around 12:00 p.m which negatively affects service delivery.

Given the importance of healthcare services to the people of Bundibugyo District, I respectfully request the @MinofHealthUG and other relevant authorities to investigate these concerns and take appropriate action to improve patient care, staff accountability, and overall hospital performance.

Today, myself and the Director General of Health Services joined stakeholders and partners for the official launch of Uganda’s first National Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology Strategic Plan (NRAT-SP) 2025–2030, a major step towards improving equitable access to quality rehabilitation and assistive technology services for all Ugandans, especially persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.

At the same event, assistive equipment including wheelchairs, walking supporters, crutches etc was handed over to support persons in need and strengthen access to rehabilitation services across communities. We remain committed to advancing Universal Health Coverage and ensuring that no one is left behind.

Dr. David Musoke Receives International Award for Malaria Research

Dr. @DavidMusoke14, Associate Professor and Chair of the Disease Control and Environmental Health Department at @Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH), has received the Low- and Middle-Income Country (LMIC) Investigator Award at the 2026 International Behavioural Trials Network (@IBTNetwork) Conference, held from May 7–9, 2026, in Montreal, Canada.

He was recognised for more than 10 years of impactful research on integrated malaria prevention in rural communities in Uganda. Dr. Musoke’s work has advanced evidence on malaria prevention and contributed to improved community health practices, particularly in Wakiso District.

The award honours an independent investigator residing and working in a low- or middle-income country who has made outstanding scientific contributions in behavioural interventions and public health.

Congratulations to Dr. Musoke on this well-deserved international recognition.

The Ministry of Health led by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. @DianaAtwine together with the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministries of Local Government, Education and Sports and Gender, Labor and Social Development and Health Service Commission convened a National Social Services Committee (SSC) meeting to strengthen coordination and improve service delivery in communities leveraging on the Parish Development Model (PDM).

The meeting had representation comprising of Resident District Commissioners (RDC), Chief Administrative Officers (CAO), District Health Officers (DHO), District Education Officers (DEO) and District Community Development Officers (DCDO)

The Social Services Committee will be piloted in the 7 Districts of; Kyotera, Omoro, Namutumba, Rubirizi, Mayuge, Ngora and Nakasongola. The pilot phase will focus on improving indicators in health, education, nutrition, sanitation, surveillance and social protection while strengthening community participation.

"The Social Services Committee discussions are critical as we strengthen implementation of the Parish Development Model, especially the 4th pillar on social services," Dr. @DianaAtwine.

Mr. Ben Kumumanya, PS @MoLGUganda called for a whole of Government approach including conducting community barazas to improve citizen feedback, accountability and awareness of available public services.

Ms. Kedrace Turyagenda, PS @Educ_SportsUg expressed confidence in the commitment of the leadership both at national and sub-national levels in ensuring that the communities and villages of Uganda are improved.

Mr. Aggrey David Kibenge, PS @Mglsd_UG noted that the meeting and the journey that is starting presents a big opportunity to work together in the 7 pilot districts to inform scale up. The results will determine how to improve service delivery.

Dr. Christine Chiedeza, who spoke on behalf of @WHOUganda reaffirmed WHO's commitment to support the functionalization of the Social Service Committees with focus on strengthening capacity for planning, coordination and monitoring of services at all levels.

Discussions highlighted the important role of Parish Chiefs, Sub-county Chiefs, CHEWs and community structures in strengthening service delivery and monitoring progress at grassroots level.

The Ministries and pilot districts committed to nominate focal persons to support implementation and coordination of Social Services Committees at national and sub-national levels.

A follow-up review meeting is scheduled for 9th September 2026 to assess progress and share lessons from implementation in the pilot districts.
