📰 ON THIS DAY 100 years ago! The Argus reported that, referring to dissatisfaction with the ramped approaches to the overhead bridge at Clifton Hill, the VR agreed an improvement could be made by substituting ramps for the flights of steps. #ICLfact#OTD 📸 PROV
🌳🌴🌴 DESTRUCTION OF A PARK! #OTD in 1899 The Argus reported strong opposition to the railway. Wellington Pde residents said "lovely ornamental plots... pines, peppermint, shade trees" would be ruthlessly chopped down. By November, construction work was well underway. #ICLfact
📰 TURNING THE FIRST SOD! On this day in 1886, the Mercury & Weekly Courier reported that the Mayor of Collingwood turned the first sod "of the miserable scraps of railway" which would connect Alphington - Collingwood, Clifton Hill - Coburg and the branch to Fitzroy. #ICLfact
The Chandler Highway heritage bridge has been a local icon for 128 years, and we have refurbished and restored the bridge as a shared walking and cycling path for the community to enjoy.

The Outer Circle Railway - the original suburban rail loop.
The old road overpasses built by John Monash still look in pretty good condition.
One day I'm going to have to walk the whole thing.
On this day in 1932, Councillor Arthur John Ernest Willison passed away in his home in Camberwell: https://t.co/dTtqBh7vFe Willison Station is named in his honour @metrotrains@Library_Vic@Boroondara
The #SuburbanRailLoop news has us looking back at Melbourne's steam-era suburban railway line, the Outer Circle (1891–1893). It linked Fairfield to Oakleigh station via Riversdale.

Well worth a read. He was given charge of construction of the Outer Circle eastern suburban railway-line in 1888 (Melb). Prior to his very significant military career. #auspol
@railmaps@metrotrains Oh! So this explains why the bike path starting across the street from Alamein looks like it once should have been a railway line?! Childhood mystery solved!!
It's #suburbsofmelbournemonday in Toorak Rd Hartwell, 1918, with tram. The train bridge was part of the Outer Circle. Got a great Boroondara Streetscape image? Enter it into our photo comp for great prizes! https://t.co/sg82n6oxh9 @PRO_Vic@yarratrams@metrotrains@Boroondara
Today's historic pic: A 3-car Comeng electric train on an Alamein to Camberwell shuttle approaches Riversdale, Vic, August 1 1987.
Riversdale is in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne 11km from downtown. The Alamein line is the last operating vestige of the Outer Circle railway.
