@nihilunbounded I think it's just going to be more of the same: # papers + journal name. This is is easy and lazy, hence what happens: it's very difficult to form a sensible opinion about work which falls outside your expertise. Ppl are extremely specialised.

@RexDouglass Not sure why you (as an outsider) feel so strongly about this. That being said, as a "scientist type" mathematician myself, it seems to me that Tao knows he is a has-been who used to solve good problems and now just talks and talks. Math = young man's game.

@r0manr0ad Grothendieck+Serre laid the foundations for a golden period in AG & related fields. The reason why AG is superior to most other fields is because the foundations are rock solid. Most linear algebra books are 400 pages, why complain about EGA lol.
