Celebrating 10 Years of Gravitational Waves!
Last week, OzGrav hosted a 2-workshop at Swinburne to mark a decade since the first detection of gravitational waves, GW150914, a discovery that reshaped astrophysics and confirmed Einstein’s prediction.
Here’s to the next decade!
Happy Birthday GW150914! @ARC_OzGRav has just celebrated the 10th anniversary of the first detection of gravitational waves at @Swinburne. With several hundred detections since then, we've learnt so much new physics about black holes and neutron stars and the nature of gravity!
Happy 10th birthday GW150914 - the first ever detection of gravitational waves, coming from a binary black hole inspiral. Check out this exciting 10th anniversary focus issue of Classical and Quantum Gravity: https://t.co/2tuF1BlaCM
It's a living collection so check back often!
Vale Rai Weiss (29 Sept 1932-25 Aug 2025), a doyen in the field of gravitational wave detection. He produced the design for a gravitational wave detector which eventually became @LIGO. An inspirational leader and passionate driver of the LIGO project who will be greatly missed 👏

Very proud of our new paper out today. An early tribute to the 10th anniversary of the historic discovery of gravitational waves.

ICYMI, this year’s #wintersolstice for the Southern Hemisphere will occur at 12:42pm AEST on Saturday, June 21, 2025. After that, days will get longer and nights will become shorter for the next 6 months, driving the slow transition from winter back to summer. ☀️
Applications are open for the #RhodesScholarship 2026! This is a life-changing, fully funded postgraduate opportunity at @UniofOxford.

And @JadePowell12 we are super excited at @CQGravity for what should be a landmark issue for this active and rapidly evolving branch of gravitational wave astrophysics 😃
Our @CQGravity focus issue on core-collapse supernova astronomy and astrophysics: past, present and future now has a webpage! I’m super excited to be one of the guest editors! 😁 https://t.co/l4c1gEpz2Y
We've just concluded a wonderful Gravitational Wave Advanced Detector Workshop in Cocoa Beach, Florida. We considered the design, instrumental aspects and science case for increased-sensitivity gravitational wave detectors for the future international network
@ARC_OzGRav
Excited to see @newscientist feature the Laser Interferometer Lunar Antenna (LILA) — a project I lead as Principal Investigator — in their story on how the lunar surface could transform our ability to study black holes and listen to the universe.

As the third portion of the fourth observing run, O4c, is starting the @LIGO - Virgo - @KAGRA_PR Collaboration is announcing a break from observing to dedicate some time to maintenance and commissioning, and therefore an extension of O4, previously planned to end in June. (1/4)
Early Bird registration closes today for the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) Collaboration Meeting to be held in Melbourne, Australia, from March 24th – 27th at the Pullman Melbourne Albert Park Hotel. The meeting will be hosted by @ARC_OzGRav.
Don't miss out!
