CRYPTO CARD USAGE BOARD — AUGUST 2026
$1.115B ran through tracked crypto cards in August, the second straight month above $1B.
@RedotPay still held 36.2% of tracked spend, while @KASTxyz, @wirexapp and @ether_fi all gained share.
KAST crossed $100M. Wirex One grew 39.9%. Etherfi led both active addresses and spend per active.
Who do you think will gain the most share in September?
The recent Rain card-contract incident made one crypto card question a lot harder to ignore:
Where is your money before you tap?
Avici and Tria both said their self-custodial wallets were untouched. The affected funds were card balances users had already moved into separate Solana card contracts.
That got me looking at how other crypto cards handle the same boundary. The setups are pretty different.
@MetaMask Card
Your assets stay in your MetaMask account until you spend. The card gets permission to use selected tokens within a spending limit you set.
@gnosispay
You fund your own Gnosis Pay Safe for spending, but that Safe remains self-custodial.
CL Card × @Ledger
You prefund a separate CL Card account from your Ledger Wallet. Once those funds move into the card account, they’re no longer under self-custody.
Same tap at the merchant, three very different meanings of “card balance”:
MetaMask: Wallet → Permission → Spend
Gnosis Pay: Your Safe → Spend
CL Card: Ledger Wallet → CL Card account → Spend
Before using any crypto card, it’s worth knowing exactly where self-custody ends.
Wallet permission, your own Safe, or a prefunded card account — which setup would you rather use?
