The Red Sea coastline is splitting into overlapping alignments, and Somalia just showed how tangled it has become.
The sequence I have been watching across the Horn of Africa because of business interests that I am able to talk about for the first time is showing up on the map:
1. In December 2025: Israel recognises Somaliland, the breakaway region, and moves toward a naval base at the port of Berbera. Mogadishu calls it a violation of its sovereignty.
2. July to September 2026: the Ansrallah Houthis in Yemen push along and seize Yemen's Red Sea coast and intensify their strikes on Saudi Arabia.
3. October 2026: the Houthis claim a ballistic-missile and drone strike on an Aramco facility in Riyadh itself. Fire and smoke are seen near the site. Saudi Arabia and Aramco say nothing. The same day, Yemeni government forces hit Houthi positions in Sana'a and the northwest.
4. October 2026: in an Al Jazeera exclusive interview I watched, the Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud names the Ansrallah Houthis in Yemen as the problem.
He said: "In real time, it is the Houthis that are aggressive, that are outside the international law or international framework", choking navigation through Bab al-Mandeb.
I see this as interests that explains the move from Somali, not his slogans.
Somalia sits across the Gulf of Aden from a coast the Houthis now hold.
That control threatens Somali ports, shipping revenue and a refugee flow that already lands on its shores, which is why Mogadishu now lines up behind the Saudi-led effort to reopen the strait because it needs the flow to open.
In the same interview, Mohamud rejects any Israeli presence "under any circumstances", calls the Berbera move part of a "Greater Israel" project, and vows to resist it. Somaliland, a part of breakaway region of Somali has signed several agreements with Israel as of recent and tilts toward Israel.
Somalia fights both the Houthis and Israel at once with this statement and with the interview.
That is the shape of this war now. Alignments no longer run in clean blocs. A single capital can oppose the Iranian axis and the Israeli one in the same breath, because each threatens a different interest.
The coalition against the Houthis is widening, but each capital joins only where its own interest is threatened, and Somalia will go no further.
Please be sure to follow if you are new here as I examine the issues that headlines do not cover.

The infrastructure to transport fuel forward on the eastern flank currently barely exists. The NATO Pipeline System is the backbone of the Allianceโs bulk-fuel distribution and comprises approximately 10,000 km of underground pipelines built during the Cold War.
The latest IISS Strategic Dossier examines critical areas for improving NATOโs operational capability and Europeโs defence self-sufficiency.

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, September 20, 2026: Ukrainian forces conducted their largest combined missile and drone strike package against strategic targets in Moscow Oblast on the night of September 19 to 20, ahead of the final day of voting in the Russian State Duma elections.
Key Takeaways:
Russiaโs failure to defend against the Ukrainian strikes prompted discontent among Russians, including in the ultranationalist information space, as the State Duma elections concluded.
The Kremlin is presenting the initial and pre-determined September 18 to 20 State Duma election results as confirmation of Russian societyโs broad support for the war effort in Ukraine despite the ruling United Russia Partyโs exit numbers being granted a comparatively conservative margin.
Numerous sources, including domestic Russian election observers, reported large-scale election violations and manipulation of the vote count in the September 18 to 20 voting period.
Ukraineโs 3rd Army Corps publicized details on the second phase of Operation Vivaldi in the Lyman direction, which included liberating Shandryholove, Derylove, and Drobysheve (all northwest of Lyman).
The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB)โs St. Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast Border Directorate published an order closing the Russian side of the border opposite Narva in northeastern Estonia from September 16 to 26.
Neither Ukrainian nor Russian forces advanced.
Ukrainian forces conducted a long-range strike against a likely Russian energy facility on the night of September 19 to 20. (1/2)
