Patrick Chase

Managing Director @Redpoint investing in Infrastructure, SaaS, & AI

[Patrick Chase @patrickachase]

When I first visited Modal’s NYC office, I asked an engineer who had just joined why he chose Modal. His response was “Because it’s a monastery of supernerds.”

Talent density has been Modal’s superpower from day one. Erik and Akshat have assembled one of the strongest technical teams I’ve ever seen, with an obsession for developer experience, first-principles thinking, and solving hard infrastructure problems.

Fast forward three years and Modal has hit some incredible milestones:

* Crossed $1B run rate
* Grown 15x in the past year
* Raised a $750M Series D at a $15.75B valuation

AI is fundamentally changing how applications consume compute. The primitives Modal has built, from inference to sandboxes to training, are becoming the foundation for a new generation of AI applications. Jev, which served 1T tokens on Modal in its first three days, is just one example of what’s possible.

Huge congrats to @bernhardsson, @akshat_b, and the entire @modal team and grateful for your continued partnership!

Thanks to everyone who joined us at Runtime yesterday.

9 tracks, 30+ speakers, and a room full of engineers running AI in production.

Dawn of a new era. Pull Requests are a thing of the past for @zeddotdev with Delta. The agentic SDLC of the future requires a new style of collaboration, where context lives right next to the code, so agents - and humans - have what they need to build.

Lineup is absolute 🔥 !!

[Modal @modal]

Runtime speaker lineup is live!

We're bringing together experts covering AI infrastructure, applications of AI in science and robotics, the future of software engineering, and more.

Love to see our customers winning!
Huge fan of @reductoai

We're expanding across Europe.

This summer we moved into a bigger Stockholm office, and today we're adding London.

We're hiring across GTM and engineering!

Today we’re introducing Delta. Delta is a multiplayer environment for coding with agents and reviewing what they build, powered by DeltaDB.

The first invites to our private beta are going out now.

Managed private LLM endpoints, now available for everyone in @modal. Deploy in a few clicks with the UI or a few keystrokes with our CLI.

The coolest thing is that these are not black boxes – customers have full access to the code underneath.

@Redpoint put out their #InfraRed100 list this morning. It lists 100 companies in cloud infrastructure who they believe are setting new benchmarks for reliability, scalability and security. These are the ones they are betting will set businesses up for success through a new paradigm of building applications. @getserval is on the list this year.

Redpoint's report behind the list is worth a read. Seventy-seven pages of analysis from the people who obsess over this topic every day. @patrickachase @loganbartlett

When we first partnered with @bernhardsson and @akshat_b, they had a vision to rebuild cloud infrastructure from the ground up for AI.

Inference, sandboxes, training, RL, batch compute - the platform they set out to build is here. Companies like Doordash, Cognition, Scale, Lovable, Substack, Suno, and Physical Intelligence are trusting it, and multiple Modal products are reaching impressive scale.

What's stuck with me over the last few years is there's a Modal way of doing things. You feel their craft in the product, the developer experience, and the team they built.

Grateful to be on this journey with Erik, Akshat, and the entire Modal team and to continue supporting them alongside @SaiVC_ and @sraney 💚

[Redpoint @Redpoint]

We're honored to deepen our partnership with @modal and co-lead their $355M Series C!

When @bernhardsson and @akshat_b started Modal in 2021, they had conviction that building a truly great cloud for AI meant rebuilding the entire stack from the ground up. Five years later, that bet has paid off.

Erik built the recommendation system behind Discover Weekly at Spotify. Akshat was an early engineer at Scale AI before joining Erik as co-founder and CTO. Together, they've assembled what one engineer affectionately calls "a monastery for super nerds" and it shows in the product.

Modal has become the high-performance cloud that serious AI teams reach for when they need to ship. We couldn't be more excited to continue backing them.

Huge congratulations to Erik, Akshat, and the entire Modal team!

FDEs are uniquely suited to be founders.

@getserval announced an Serval Start: a two-year program for FDEs who want to be founders in the future.

This is a truly incredible opportunity to see enterprise AI agents up close, work with an exceptional team, and build out network of peers and investors. Excited to be involved!

Parallel Agents just shipped. Mix and match any agent, run them all at once, and manage everything from a new Threads Sidebar. Claude Agent, Codex, Zed's agent, or anything on ACP. One window, across all your projects.

"Talent is the only durable moat."

@jakeserval on how a motivated competitor with access to the latest AI tools can copy everything within a year. The only thing that compounds in a way that can't be replicated is the people you build with.

This week on Unsupervised Learning, @jacobeffron and I sat down with @jakeserval, co-founder & CEO of @getserval.

Serval is going directly after ServiceNow in ITSM and already working with companies like Notion, Clay, Abridge, Fox, Mercor, and Verkada.

We partnered with Serval at the Series A. What’s stood out most over the last year is their speed of execution. We get into how they’re winning customers and talent so quickly, including:

▪️ Why building a system of record beats layering on top
▪️ The "mirror architecture" that lets Serval land enterprise customers
▪️ Why ITSM is more vulnerable to AI disruption than other verticals
▪️ The Future IT Stack when agents submit their own requests
▪️ The AI-native org chart
▪️ Why recruiting is the #1 job of every Serval employee
▪️ The Dream Team Draft: recruiting during hypergrowth
