This is the year when the game of two halves became the game of four quarters. And the greatest sport and event was damaged for fistfuls of dollars. Hydration breaks ruin the game’s flow and frustrates fans and viewers. If hydration breaks were solely about player welfare then they would be linked to the temperature in the stadia. It’s a nonsense having a three-minute break in an air-conditioned arena.

Fifa should long ago have established a working party of coaches, sports scientists, national team doctors and Fifpro to agree a set temperature at kickoff, say 25C, which triggers the breaks. That would prove the breaks were for player welfare. At the moment, and to nobody’s surprise, it is widely accepted that these breaks are for US TV to accommodate commercials. Big bucks for the small screen.

Fifa should have thought more about the effect on games and to fan (and viewer) experience when negotiating. Coaches’ desire for a mid-half tactical time-out masquerading as a drinks stop should be resisted anyway. Games have been played for 150 years without needing such intervention. Coaches can shout instructions. And who says that 22 mins and 67 mins is when a coach needs to intervene anyway. It’s nonsense. It’s about money.

Respected and sane footballing voices from Virgil van Dijk to Mauricio Pochettino have spoken out against the breaks. Fifa should listen to them not appear only to listen to the rustle of dollar bills. It’s important that there is resistance to this from all over. Because if we tolerate this, our TV games could be next. BBC can’t do ads, ITV says it won’t follow its US counterparts. But it has been discussed by TV people. It’ll come one day. #FIFAWorldCup.

Statement from Lord David Blunkett, a lifelong Sheffield Wednesday supporter, following the news the club is being taken over by David Storch & Arise Capital #SWFC:

“This has been a terrible saga. The 18-point deduction, the block on the purchase of new players, the cap on pay, plus the sale by the administrators of key members of the squad have devastated the team, the non-playing staff, local businesses and, above all, the fans.

“This has been punishment meted out to entirely the wrong people. The former owner and sole director of Sheffield Wednesday, Dejphon Chansiri – who refused to sell the club 12 months ago even though it was clear that he'd run out of money and the fans had run out of patience – has taken a financial hit of his own making. But it is everyone who loves the Club and cares about football who have felt the damage, the sheer unfairness, the disregard for competition within the Championship, and the inevitable relegation last February down into League One.

“This is a sorry tale of rules put together to deal with an entirely different scenario, bringing a once great club to its knees.

“We, the fans, the community that surrounds Hillsborough, and those sympathetic in the city, will support the fightback in the rebuilding of this great club

“Fans of football across the country have been wonderful and they will rejoice with us, long-standing supporters of the Owls, in the intervention of David Storch and his Partners in their clear commitment to running the Club on fair and transparent lines; to involve the fans Trust and to behave with probity and respect.

“All of us owe Henrik Pedersen, the manager throughout this season, a debt of gratitude for the way he's been able to continually motivate the small squad of players to get out in the field and to give their all. Those players deserve a medal for retaining their morale and self-respect, and whilst losing game after game, keeping their heads held high and giving the always committed and large group of supporters something to be proud of.  We also owe a debt of gratitude to the non-playing staff, who have worked tirelessly against the odds.

“I would also like to pay tribute to Clive Betts MP, who, in acting as an honest broker with the fans, administrators, the EFL and with David Storch assisted greatly in keeping this bid in play and, as a fellow lifelong Sheffield Wednesday supporter and friend, deserves full credit for the part he has played.”
