It’s crazy how our societies are full of casual magic and rituals most people don’t even know they are performing.
Take the birthday song, which is literally a fire ritual/candle magic:
1 your name (binds the work to a specific person)
2 is written inside a circle (standard boundary in ritual practice)
3 with fire inside it (a medium understood to translate something from the material plane into the subtle one)
4 and you chant “happy birthday to you” three times (standard number of repetitions across most traditions)
5 you state your petition/desire (energetic exchange, who are you making a deal with?)
6 and then you blow out the candles (you give it your breath/lifeforce)
This one is weird though because traditionally, you let it burn and blowing out candles is considered bad practice because breath is used to scatter rather than direct. But regardless,
7 the light goes out (and the wish goes with it into the unseen)
8 then there’s smoke (a traditional carrier)
9 there are the witnesses (group participation is supposed to amplify the energetic charge)
10 and lastly the secrecy (a ritual principle, the working is sealed by not being dispersed through speech).
So the full sequence is: contained field, named subject, fire lit, collective chant three times, silent petition, breath released, seal held (or not? because you extinguish it). But it’s a complete working.
OK, do we even realize what we’re doing?? Nobody ever stopped to think about it, isn’t that wild?

One hormone running unchecked.
Here's exactly what that means and what stops it:
Here, the edge of my understanding of suffering:
As I've worked to dismantle psychological conditioning, I've noticed the following cycle. First, a sense of stuckness or badness arises, due to a particular combination of external circumstances and internal conditioning. If this is approached using some therapeutic technique (eg IFS, imaginal dialogue), and the underlying emotions are resolved, then the badness tends to dissipate and leave a sense of blankness. I interpret this as an old, fixed structure in the mind dissolving, and the systems that generate meaning, motivation, and action struggling to figure out what to do in a new emotional landscape. Eventually (hours to days) the blankness passes, and leaves a raging energy and impulsivity. This too fades in hours to days, leaving a sense of liberation from the need to do anything at all.
After fifty or sixty of these cycles, some strange things started to happen. Unpleasant memories started to arise spontaneously, one by one every hour or two for days at a time. Many of these were things I had “forgotten”, and often they would make me flinch when they arose. I guess this is memory reconsolidation happening spontaneously? Probably because after so much inner work the mind starts to feel that it’s safe to bring up those things, as it expects the conscious mind will meet them compassionately. The really strange thing is that these memories, upon arising, distinctly feel like they’ve always been there, coloring the way I view the world but hidden from conscious awareness. As this progresses I became noticeably less reactive (from a baseline of already feeling fairly non-reactive). My memories of the past became really fuzzy, which is strange because I used to have video-like play by play memories of all kinds of things. Also I started to notice my vision becoming very detailed and colorful and expansive - not more focused or clearer, but more luminous, saturated, and beautiful. Even looking at a leaf has become deeply pleasurable. This feeling comes and goes but corresponds especially with the end of the “blank” phase in the cycle above. Finally, the sense of self-consciousness or embarrassment has basically vanished, which gives me much more range of expression in social settings.
As this progressed I started to recognize that when I experience suffering, it always leads to a related memory coming up later. So I guess the suffering is caused by the memory being combined with or overlaid on the present. But it’s not just the expectation that something bad will happen in the real world because it happened in the past - I think a large part of it, or possibly all of it, is the expectation that something bad will happen internally, most commonly some form of self-betrayal or self-coercion.
Why betray oneself? I think probably because one comes to the reasonable conclusion that compromise is necessary in order to bring about desirable external conditions. But since it seemed like betrayal or internal fracture was the root of suffering, I got interested in what would happen if I just committed to always doing what felt right all the time. Disclaimer I have really excellent impulse control and executive function and self-awareness at this point so I have no idea if this is going to lead to positive outcomes in general. But it turned out that as I made a point of not managing my life every time the impulse to manage it arose, the above cycle continued. Instead of energy, though, it led me in a direction of devotion, or submission, to things that matter more than me. Simultaneously the sense that I am doing anything in my life, and the sense that I have to do anything, is noticeably diminished. It’s a bit of a paradox - if something matters more than you, shouldn’t you be going to great lengths to express that? But I don’t see that happening. The kind of devotion that arises naturally is simple and quiet. It seems that as long as I make choices that are internally aligned as they come up, I am not really “on the hook” for anything else, and as I get more aligned, the parts of my mind that are controlling and planning and managing just drop away. The future feels unreal and insubstantial.
This all sounds great but to me it’s a powerful indictment of our society and overall philosophy of life. We take for granted the notion that you’re supposed to be able to formulate and execute plans, behave consistently, and operate as part of large, rigid systems. In fact not being able to do that is often classified as pathology. But rigidity and regularity are often the source of self-betrayal and self-coercion, which (at my current level of understanding) form the core of suffering. You can have all the freedoms you want on paper but if you’re not free to act according to moment-to-moment feelings I don’t think it matters. The bait and switch is creating a “free” society but installing guardrails within peoples’ minds instead. The cool thing is that you can still develop that freedom, but of course it’s a lot of work to undo social conditioning, and it could result in terrible consequences.
The inner investigation has reached a natural conclusion now because it seems to be running in the background - the memories come up, less often now; I get random insights into how some big thing in my mind was a story constructed from smaller things, and that goes away; and so on. I think the open question for me is “what now?” - what is worth doing? is this all there is? should I become a monk? (mostly joking) and various things along those lines.

Bashar says something most people completely misunderstand:
When you follow your passion, nothing negative can happen.
If negativity appears, it’s because you left the vibration of your passion.
Your passion is your highest frequency
your soul’s signature vibration.
It’s the state where you’re aligned, inspired, connected, guided.
So when life suddenly feels heavy, chaotic, or “off”…
it’s not because passion led you into the wrong place.
It’s because fear pulled you out of alignment.
Fear-based beliefs distort your frequency.
They break resonance.
They create static in the field.
But the moment you return to the vibration of your passion,
your true frequency,
the distortion dissolves.
Opportunities reappear.
Synchronicities return.
Life feels effortless again.
Because passion isn’t just emotion.
It’s energy physics.
Resonance.
Coherence.
Harmony.
Your passion is the compass of your higher self,
the frequency that guides you toward the timeline meant for you.
Stay in that vibration, and everything unfolds.
Leave it, and you’ll feel it instantly.
So the real question is:
Are you living in passion…or in fear?
The Sacred Return: On Becoming Like a Little Child
We spend our lives building a self: a fortress of knowledge, a persona of accomplishments, a shield of defenses. We strive to become someone. Yet, at the heart of the world’s wisdom traditions whispers a paradox: to reach the highest state of consciousness, you must become like a little child.
This is not a call to childishness, but to childlikeness. It is an invitation to shed the complex layers of the ego and return to the essence of what we are before the world tells us who we should be.
The texts point the way:
In the Christian Gospels
Jesus of Nazareth placed a child in the midst of his disciples and said:
“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3)
And again:
“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." (Luke 18:16)
What does this mean? The "kingdom of heaven" is not a distant place but a state of being—a way of perceiving and interacting with reality rooted in the divine. A child embodies the keys to this state:
· Radical Trust: A child does not fret about tomorrow's meals or clothing. They exist in a natural state of trust that their needs will be met.
· Absence of Pride: A child has not yet constructed a social mask. They are authentic, without pretense or the need to prove their importance.
· Openness to Wonder: To a child, the world is miraculous. A ladybug is a universe, a puddle is an ocean. They perceive the sacred in the ordinary.
· Readiness to Receive: A child knows they are not self-sufficient. They receive love, care, and gifts freely, without the adult urge to immediately earn or repay.
In the Tao Te Ching
Lao Tzu, the ancient master of Taoism, constantly points to the power of softness, humility, and simplicity—the virtues of the uncarved block. He writes:
“The supreme good is like water, which nourishes all things without trying to.” “He who is in harmony with the Tao is like a newborn child.”
What does this mean? The Tao is the unnameable, flowing way of the universe. A newborn child is its perfect symbol because they are:
· Soft and Flexible: A child’s body and spirit are not yet hardened into rigid views and habits. They flow with life effortlessly.
· Perfectly Authentic: They act from genuine need and desire, not from calculated social strategy. They are an expression of nature itself.
· In Non-Striving (Wu Wei): A child does not try to be a child; they simply are. They act without forcing, embodying the principle of effortless action.
In Hindu and Buddhist Thought
While the precise phrase "be like a child" may be less common, the qualities are ever-present. The goal of sadhana (spiritual practice) is to become free of the vasanas (mental impressions) and samskaras (karmic imprints) that create the complex adult ego.
The enlightened being, the Jnani or Bodhisattva, is often described as having a childlike quality:
· Spontaneous: They act from intuition and wisdom, not from past conditioning.
· Curious and Present: Like a child, they meet each moment fresh, without the baggage of yesterday’s judgments.
· Without Guile: Their heart is open, without manipulation or hidden agendas.
The Common Thread: Unlearning to Remember
The journey, then, is not one of accumulation, but of unlearning.
It is to shed:
· The need to be right.
· the weight of past resentments.
· The obsession with a hypothetical future.
· The illusion of separation and control.
To become like a child is to return to beginner’s mind—a concept celebrated in Zen Buddhism as Shoshin. It is to look at the morning sun as if seeing it for the first time. It is to receive a kindness with genuine surprise and gratitude. It is to fall down, cry, and then get up again immediately, without weaving a story of failure around the fall.
It is to stand before the vast mystery of existence not with a textbook of answers, but with wide-eyed wonder, ready to be astonished.
It is the hardest work we will ever do, for it asks us to let go of everything we thought made us somebody, to discover we are, and always have been, everything.

I'll give you an interesting story.
depression is repressed anger. I did work with art of accomplishment and the disappearance of my depression, self-shamming inner criticism was completley tied to the emergence of my anger. basically the ability to say "what the fuck? hell nah."
anxiety is repressed fear: still integrating, but after that period i got pretty intense anxiety for a while. The inner critic was no longer "I suck i'm so bad no one will like me" it's "oh shit i ahven't done X yet. I'm fucked". It went from who i want to be to be great, to "what i have to do to not die." But! the anxiety dropped as fear became a more embodied experience.
These are the mechanistic underpinnings of correlation studies like this. I think it's fairly spot on actually.
