Child psychiatrist, author David Rettew, MD. Radical moderate. In Oregon at Lane County Behavioral Health and OHSU but views my own. #Parenting#Mentalhealth
Happy book launch day!
"As the parent of a complicated child, I am so thrilled about this new book from Dr. Rettew. This is the parenting manual I wish I’d had for all four of my children" - @anarchistmom

@m_scheeringa These are good points, although I do believe that excessive screens aren't good for kids. Fortunately, there are studies underway like the ABCD study that will be better equipped to answer this question more definitively.
Social prescribing is fast growing substitute for mindless med prescribing.
Goal: Engage patients with services that help meet social & economic needs & suggest activities that improve enjoyment of life.
Here's the WHO Toolkit showing how to implement:

I really don't need, or even want, every actor or athlete I watch tell me their political views.
However, if you spew wild extreme stuff, it's going to affect my ability to support you.
Here's to the Chiefs missing lots of field goals next year.
@sbaroncohen While I'm usually wary of any article that begins with "the truth...," there are good points here that follow the science with how dimensional mental health conditions actually are.
Pleased to see some of the more recent reviews on Amazon by readers of my parenting book.
"A hidden gem!"
"Mastered the art of explaining research in an engaging manner."
"This is the one parenting book to have."
"A breath of fresh air."
Thanks for the kind words.
Some of the same folks flying the flag upside down were condemning athletes for taking a knee at the national anthem.
Consistency has never been a strong suit when it comes to politics.
From a brain science perspective, though, it's kinda fascinating.
I'll be speaking at Southern Oregon Non-Profit Summit 2024 on Jun 13 - 15, 2024. I would love to see you there!🎉🎉

Parental substance use leading to child abuse and neglect leading to child mental health problems leading to psychiatry appointment to "fix it." Hey @Mad_In_America, if you really want to reduce medication use, maybe devote a little bit of energy on stopping this cycle early?
@Mad_In_America A broken bone is normal response to being hit by a bus, but we still use a diagnosis and still try to help people's suffering. Can we elevate this discussion please?
A link to our newly published article "Widening Our Lane: How Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists Can Embrace the Full Spectrum of Mental Health." Link is free for about a month. https://t.co/LBgpTWMzGY
Will be doing keynote at the annual Oregon Council of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (OCCAP) conference May 18. Title is "Being a Full Mental HEALTH Professional." Come join and learn about how psychiatry is changing.
Lane County, Oregon is launching a mobile crisis service. If you are a #mentalhealth professional, this is a great opportunity to live in an awesome part of the country. Jobs - Lane County
@justin_garson While I agree that we are using a lot more clinical language these days and it isn't always useful, remember that labelling is going to happen regardless. You many not like "ADHD," but I'm not sure "stupid and lazy" are any better.
My latest post on @PsychToday.
Anyone else getting a little nervous about how much telemedicine has become so huge? This was supposed to be a temporary COVID thing.

Congrats to all the medical students matching into psychiatry. You've made a terrific choice and will be trained to make a huge positive difference to a lot of people.
@markhoro@joannamoncrieff Yes but that's a problem with interpretation not with the label itself. There is nothing preventing us from teaching folks that mental health conditions can be mild or serious, just like everything in health.
